COLOR

COLOR: is the reflection of light from a pigmented surface. Color is the

personality of a design.

COLOR CATEGORIES:

PRIMARY: red, blue and yellow

SECONARY: Mix two primary colors equally. Orange, green and

purple.

TERTIARY: Created when a primary color and a secondary color are

equally mixed. Blue-green, blue-purple, red-orange,

red-purple, yellow-orange and yellow green.

COLOR TERMS:

HUE: color, any color

INTENSITY: brightness or dullness of a color

VALUE: lightness or dullness of a hue

TINT: add white, increases the value

TONE: add gray

SHADE: add black, lessen value

COLOR HARMONY: use colors in a pleasing way

COLOR SCHEME: the make of colors

DIFFERENT COLOR SCHEMES:

1. MONOCHROMATIC: using different tint, tones and shades of a

single hue.

2. ACCENTED NUETRAL: using tint, tones and shades of a single hue

with a neutral background.

3. ANALOGOUS: combine any 3 adjacent colors on the color wheel.

4. COMPLEMENTARY: combine any 2 colors directly across from each other on the color wheel. They are

contrasting colors and do not share a primary

relationship.

5. SPLIT COMPLEMENTARY: one color is combined with 2 colors on

each side of its direct complement.

6. DOUBLE SPLITY COMPLEMENTARY: made of colors that are

adjacent to both direct complements.

7. TRIADIC: use 3 colors equal distance apart.

8. TETRADIC: using any 4 colors equal distance apart from each

other on the color wheel. Made up of 2 direct complements.

9. POLYCHROMATIC: using 3 or more colors that are not directly

related to each other.
