[Pages:2]YMCA of Metro North Board of Directors Meeting

September 26, 2019 4:00 pm

Administrative Offices, 2 Centennial Drive, Peabody

In attendance: Chuck Holden, Mike Brown, Jackie Torigian, Jackie Kugell, Andrew Demakes, Carolina Trujillo, Charles Whipple, Steve Valenti

Staff: Kathleen Walsh, Betsy LaFontaine, Paul Mantell, Danielle LeBlanc, Andrew Lamson

The meeting was called to order at 4:00 pm by Chuck Holden.

Opening Thought (Andrew Lamson) Andrew was introduced at the Aquatics Director at Torigian, and he shared a story about a woman who signed up for adult swim lessons this past summer. She thought she was too heavy and would never learn to swim. She became optimistic after her first class and signed up her husband and children for lessons too. At the end of the summer she broke down in tears and said that for the first time ever, she did not feel isolated at the pool while on a family vacation, and was able to enjoy playing in the water with her kids. Her family continues to take lessons and make significant progress, which has been meaningful for staff as well.

Finance report (Betsy LaFontaine/Mike Brown) August ended at 83k income over expenses, ahead of budget. Occupancy and equipment lines higher, due to a lot of end of summer work, refreshing classrooms and replacing classroom equipment. Saugus is significantly ahead in fundraising in comparison to last year. Peabody received a lot of targeted funds this year (LiveStrong, Enhance, Adaptive, Opioid). Camp revenue up this year, 42% in Melrose and 10% in Saugus. Childcare up in Peabody after we expanded ELP licensing. All branches are doing better than budgeted.

Lynn Project/Melrose Project Discussion (All) Signed elevator contract with RC Griffin (they build the Gymnastics Center). Completion date per contract is February 10, 2020. GMP 796k over two years. Involved a project managing company, PMA, for professional oversight of the Lynn project. Very happy with them so far and Project Manager Mohamed will now do all the communicating for the project instead of the Y. South Shore Gunite will now be doing the pool. Completion date has shifted to Nov. 16, 2020, assuming partial winter conditions. PMA is doing the math on putting the project on a 3 month hold for the winter. Starting October 9, there will be an 8:30 am meeting in Lynn every other Wednesday with PMA to discuss change orders, decisions that need to be made.

Board Recruitment and Growth (Charles Whipple) Peter Harmeling resigned from the board last week. Asked everybody to think if they know of any potential candidates for the board. Still looking to increase diversity on the board.

We have a potential new board member, to hopefully be nominated at the Nov. meeting. Executive Session
