[pic] ASC Blood Borne Pathogen Clean Up Procedure and Policy

All contact with bodily fluids should be handled according to this policy. Bodily fluids include blood, semen, urine, feces, vomit, and mucus.

Training

The following positions will be trained to handle bodily fluid spills. Training will include universal precautions, procedures on clean up, disposal of cleaning products and medical follow up after any exposure. Any employee given this training will be offered the Hepatitis B vaccination at no cost.

Positions to be trained

All managers, supervisors, maintenance workers, janitors and those cleaning bathrooms

Recordkeeping

The Human Resource Office will retain all records regarding training on blood borne pathogen training, Hepatitis B shots or declinations, exposures and any follow-up medical treatment or testing.

Equipment

All Dining Units, Commissary, Stadium, Winchell Hall, and the dock area in Neubig Hall will have a bodily fluid clean-up kit. These kits will consist of paper towels, bleach (in non-food service areas), laetrile gloves, absorbing-sprinkle material, and zip lock bags. Garbage bags are located in all areas and food service areas have a sanitizer to use instead of bleach.

Resuscitations Kits are located in or near the Blood Clean up Kit and contains a mouth-to-mouth barrier for resuscitation.

Clean up Procedures

1. All employees or customers that injure themselves should clean up their own bodily fluids, if possible. Blood Borne Pathogen Clean up Kits for cleaning up of bodily fluids are provided in each Dining Hall, Commissary, Stadium, Winchell, and the dock area in Neubig Hall.

2. If the employees or customers cannot clean up their own bodily fluids, the manager, supervisor, or trained personnel must clean up the bodily fluids. The person must put on laetrile gloves. A-1

If a splash is possible, goggles should be worn. The area should be wiped with paper towels to remove the major part of the spill; absorbing sprinkle material may be used, if necessary. Large spills should be blocked off with chairs or wet floor signs. Do not leave spills unattended. The surface should be left wet for 15 minutes with the 10% bleach solution or 10 minutes with dining services sanitizer to disinfect the surface. Mops or bar mops must soak for same length of time to be sanitized. When possible, food contact surfaces and utensils should be placed through the dish machine or sink sanitizer to be sanitized. All paper towels, absorbing material, and the gloves should be placed into a zip lick bag and adding enough bleach solution or sanitizer to soak the items. This zip lock bag is placed in a garbage bag and taken directly to the dumpster. DO NOT put it in an indoor trash receptacle.

4. Hands should be washed with warm water and soap as soon as possible after the clean up. Any splashes of fluids into the eye should be flushed with the eyewash stations available in that area.

5. Any employee who has contact with blood or bodily fluids to eye, mouth, mucous membranes or non-intact skin, including skin with dermatitis, hangnails, cuts, abrasions or acne should seek medical treatment immediately.

6. If a garment is penetrated by blood or other potentially infectious materials, the garment should be removed immediately or as soon as possible. It should be handled the same as paper towels or mops and bar mops.

7. Any food contaminated with blood or bodily fluids must be discarded. Reheating food will not destroy this contaminant. Food should be placed in a zip lock bag and soaked with 10 % bleach solution or sanitizer. It is then placed in a garbage bag and taken to the dumpster outside.

8. Only the Janitorial staff, or properly trained non-janitorial staff, should clean bathrooms.

Documentation of blood or bodily fluids contact

All first aid or clean up that involves blood or bodily fluids must be reported on an ASC Employee Injury Report by the end of the work shift to the Human Resources Office. Any unprotected contact with blood or bodily fluids should be included in the report.

Hepatitis B Vaccinations

All employees will be offered the Hepatitis B Vaccination Series when they are initially trained in the ASC Blood Borne Pathogen Clean up Procedure. All employees who have unprotected contact with bodily fluids will also be offered the opportunity to receive the Hepatitis B Vaccinations. Any employee who initially declines the vaccinations may later request that the vaccinations be provided.
