CORONAVIRUS FAQsWhat are the symptoms of Covid-19?The CDC lists several symptoms that are typical of covid-19 including: FEVER/CHILLS, COUGH, SHORTNESS OF BREATH/DIFFICULTY BREATHING, FATIGUE, MUSCLE/BODY ACHE, HEADACHE, NEW LOSS OF TASTE/SMELL, SORE THROAT, CONGESTION/RUNNY NOSE, NAUSEA/VOMITING, or DIARRHEA. Remember, children can often have atypical symptoms or no symptoms at all. When should I see a doctor? If there are no symptoms or mild symptoms there is no need to come to the doctor. You should stay at home, rest, and get lots of fluids. If you have other symptoms like wheezing, or ear pain, it is worth coming to the doctor as you might have a different condition that might need prescription medications. When should I go to the hospital? You do not need to go to the hospital unless there are severe symptoms including: TROUBLE BREATHING (struggling to breath), PERSISTENT CHEST PAIN, CONFUSION (if they were grown you would think they were drunk), INABILITY TO STAY AWAKE, BLUE LIPS/FACE.When should I get tested?NOT EVERYONE NEEDS A COVID-19 TEST! Our doctors will determine if a test is needed and if so, when. We may want to test right away, we may want to wait until 7 days after exposure, or we may not test at all depending on the situation. This is due to the accuracy of the different tests based on symptoms and timing. We want to make sure that if you test, the results will mean something. Please make an appointment to discuss that with your doctor. (Tele-health visits are available if you would like.)If I had a positive test, how long am I contagious?1) No symptoms: You are contagious for 10 days after the positive test.2)Symptoms: You are considered contagious until it has been 10 days since the first symptoms appeared (even if symptoms started after the positive test!) AND no fever for 24 hours AND improved symptoms (they don’t have to be gone, just better).3)Severe symptoms: You may be contagious for longer than the 10 days if your symptoms are severe or if you are immune-suppressed. Please make an appointment to speak with your doctor if you have questions about this. (Tele-health visits are available if you would like.)How long should I quarantine?1)If you have had a positive test you should quarantine until you are no longer contagious (see above).2)If you have been exposed to someone with a positive test but either tested negative or have not been tested, you should quarantine for 10 days after the last exposure to the contagious person. If the person you were exposed to does NOT live with you, you should quarantine for 10 days after the last time you saw that person. If the person you were exposed to DOES live with you, you should quarantine for 10 days after that person is NO LONGER CONTAGIOUS (see above). Please note that this means a total of 20 days from when the person who tested positive got sick! Is there any way to get out of quarantine early? The safest thing is to do the full time. The CDC is aware that this can put a burden on families and so has given guidance about how to “get out early”. If you are exposed to covid19 but have had NO SYMPTOMS by 7 days after the last exposure, you can get a send-out PCR test. If that test comes back negative, you can end quarantine early. (Please be aware that although there is a reduced risk of spread, it is still possible to pass the virus even with this process.) ................
