Buzz Marketing
Discussion Questions
1. What does Mark Hughes say are the six buttons of buzz, or ways to get people to talk about your stuff. Describe each idea and how it plays out in your ministry area or at Oak Leaf Church in general.
2. How does your ministry capture the attention of people inside the church? What about outside the church?
3. What other takeaways or specific ideas did you have as you read this book?
The Next Generation Leader
Discussion Questions
1. What is it that "only you can do"? What are your core competencies and how will they create success for your area of ministry? What weaknesses will you delegate in order to "only do what you can do"?
2. What needs to be moved from your "to do" list to your "stop doing list"? How would this affect the one opportunity in your ministry with the greatest potential?
3. How do you currently handle uncertain situations? As a leader, your level of uncertainty will only climb. How do you plan to lead in uncertain situations so that everything is communicated with clarity?
4. As you think about where you are professionally versus where you want to be, what or who stands in your way? How will you ensure you will always walk in the freedom reserved for those who are willing to live with the consequences of uncompromising virtue?
5. Andy Stanley states he posted this question in his office, "What do I believe is impossible to do in my field... but if it could be done would fundamentally change my business?" How can you apply this concept to your area of ministry?
The E-Myth Revisited
Discussion Questions
1. What is the E-myth? Can you apply that concept to your life experience?
2. The book describes 3 types of people, the entrepreneurial, the manager and the technician. Within each of us we have varying degrees of each type. Rank the three types in order from one to three (most like you to the least like you). Why do you think you developed the types in that order? In which role/type do you operate most effectively?
3. A big part of Oak Leaf Church is creating systems. The book calls this franchising. Are you a person who thinks in terms of systems? Do you have a natural tendency to think big picture and break it down into systems for reproduction at a later time? If the answer is no, why?
Simple Church
Discussion Questions
1. Simplicity is a big part of the culture at Oak Leaf Church, but it’s something that we must fight to maintain. What areas in your ministry have become too complex over time and what do you need to do to simplify?
2. How would you rate the effectiveness of each part of your ministry? What grade would you assign each ministry?
3. How can you make your ministry, needs, processes, structure clearer?
4. We are not a federation of ministries, but one church. How does your ministry fit in with the overall, big-picture strategy for Oak Leaf Church? How can your ministry support, not compete with, the mission of Oak Leaf Church?
Made to Stick
Discussion Questions
1. Chip and Dan write about schemas. What are schemas and what schemas could you use to describe your ministry, event or program?
2. What have you done or seen done that is unexpected in ministry?
3. What stories have come out of your ministry that are worth retelling?
4. According to the authors, what makes ideas sticky?
Why Men Hate Going to Church
Discussion Questions
1. What did you think about the general stereotypes outlined in this book? Do you agree or disagree with the author’s assessment?
2. Do you think Oak Leaf Church does a good job of reaching men? Why or why not? What about your particular ministry area?
3. What are some ways that you believe we could “restore the masculine spirit” to Oak Leaf Church?
Creating Magic
Discussion Questions
1. What training opportunities or events have you found to be the most effective for you personally? What kind of training works best with your lead volunteers and leaders? How are you intentionally developing specific people?
2. Like Disney, Oak Leaf Church looks to create a positive experience for the guest? How does Disney do that? What are some things that the church can learn from Disney? What are some things that your ministry could learn from Disney?
3. Do you find it easy or difficult to “stay ahead of the pack?” Where do you see your ministry going and what do you think will happen in the next year? What do you need to do prepare for the next season?
4. The author says that the structure is not effective in a department if people are complaining about wasted time or unclear roles, too many people are getting involved in every decision, people hide within the system, there are too many or too few direct reports or meetings are long or unproductive. Where have you seen this happen and what steps should you take to prevent it?
