First Grade Summer ReadingParents – We are so excited that your child will be a first grader in August! We want you to know that there are many developmentally appropriate reading levels among rising first graders. The list below is a small sampling of grade and age “good fit” books. Get to know what fits your child. During the summer, please invest in your child’s reading by getting involved in these 3 types of reading:1. Read aloud (parent reads child a book that is above their current reading level). 2. Read together (parent and child partner read a book that your child can read some of on his or her own). 3. Read independently (your child reads books aloud, mostly on their own – this allows for constant use of reading strategies and fluency practice). **Encourage your child to use picture clues and reading strategies (see back) as he/she reads independently. Parent help is OK, but work hard to coach, not tell, the word. Your child should be able to answer the questions: “Who was in this part?” and “What happened?” after each page or several pages. You can encourage conversations about all books you read by using the retell formats on the back of this paper.**Great Books: (Your child has free choice in their summer reading by following the advice given above and using some of the suggestions below!)This list just scratches the surface of all the great books kids can read!
