on the memoir of the same title by disabled Vietnam veteran Ron Kovic. Kovic (Cruise) is a crew-cut patriotic Marine recruit who is transformed into a long-haired paralyzed anti-war protester by his experiences in Vietnam and the VA hospital system. Ultimately, he achieves a measure of vindication when he addresses the 1976 Democratic convention.
