Self-Appraisal of your Personal Health PracticesStudent’s Name:Institutional Affiliation:Self-Appraisal of Your Personal Health PracticesIntroductionBowen family systems theory is a human behavior theory that describes the family as an emotional unit and uses systems thinking to explain the complex connections in the unit (Papero, 2007). Bowen’s theory system can be used to demonstrate different behaviors such as violence or anger towards, someone, something or a group of people within the family and the members’ interconnectedness. Clear and Cogent Description of your Reflections on how Health Practices Developed for you and your Family over TimeRecently, I realized that whenever cases of violence against women or children were reported in the hospital, I became angry about it and could not help but curse those responsible for the action. I would develop some stress which would last for up to a week. I would blame men for all the harm that the children and women were undergoing and sometimes get mad at the staff who would try to defend men. Also, I had no close male friends. I knew it was normal to sympathize with victims of violence, but my sympathy had developed to anger and hatred. I could not handle well the men who came for counseling services for I felt they were to blame for any family problem. For it to start making sense, my superior called me and invited me to examine my reactivity to violence on women and children from the Bowen family systems theory perspective. TransitionsAs it turns out, there were many cases of violence in our nuclear and extended family. Our father would come home drunk throw us out of the house after giving my mother a thorough beating. At one time my mother ran away and left us which resulted in being taken care of by our paternal grandmother. Sometimes mother would be left with bruises. Later she developed stress which led to blood high blood pressure. Due to the strong bond between my mother and me, the experience affected me. The whole occurrence left me with much hatred for men and a feeling that they are the sole cause of women suffering. Most women in our family do not get married and the few who did, did not stay in marriages for long, and most are very defensive and violent. Family PatternsI have viewed my reactions from a dsm5 perspective and realized that my symptoms were rising from within me. It was a mental disorder that as stated by the American psychiatric association is a psychological or behavioral syndrome which occurs in an individual. According to Titelman (2014), it is a family’s nature that its members are highly connected emotionally. From the perspective of attachment theory, the way I understood my reaction to anger on men was through my fear and the strong connection between my mother and me. ConclusionThrough working with different specialists, I have developed a new way of relating to my previous family experiences. This has also made my clinical work better since the feelings of anger and hatred have reduced. Bowen theory is significant in my case since it has helped me understand the source of my anger and hatred towards men. I have the used the tool of forgiveness as advised by Rivera & Fincham (2015), to overcome. The anger and hatred feelings were rising from within me and I am recovering. ReferencesPapero, D. V.
