To minimize stress on students and instructors, Mines is recommending instructors consider

implementing alternate assessment options instead of summative assessments as much as

possible for the remainder of the semester. However, we understand that there may be

circumstances where high-stakes exams may still be necessary. To support instructors who require

additional security for their online exams, Mines has purchased a limited number of licenses for a

test proctoring solution called Proctorio. Instructors can request Proctorio be included in their

Canvas course by submitting a Mines Help Center request. Please submit requests as soon as

possible prior to an exam to allow time for instructor training and a practice session for students.

What can I do to make my test accessible? How much time should students get to complete the test?

When should students be able to access the test?

How do students access the test? How do students submit their answers?

However, there are several drawbacks to proctored exams, including the following: They often add stress for students They require a lot of planning and setup for both the instructor and the student Not all students have the technology necessary (e.g., webcams), and proctoring solutions can lead to false positives that must be reviewed by the instructor after the exam

For more information about making your test accessible, go here

Although it would be ideal if we could simply give our exams during our scheduled class session with the same amount of allotted time, current circumstances make it difficult to do this. Students may not be able to join synchronously, they may not have the technology (e.g., webcam) to participate fully, and they may feel additional stress when taking exams in a new online environment.

Below are general guidelines to consider when deciding about timing and access--use your best

judgment for your course content and learning outcomes.

If your primary concern about giving students more time or a wider window to access

exams has to do with cheating, consider implementing some options in the section above

Exams and quizzes delivered remotely should not be longer or have more questions than

they would if students completed them in person

Consider giving your students more time to complete the exam or quiz than you might if

they were taking it in person, to account for added stress or navigating a new system

If you choose to administer your quizzes/exams through Canvas, consider creating a

"practice" exam that students can use to make sure they understand and can navigate the

testing environment before starting the real exam

Refer to the accessibility document (in the section above) for timing and access guidelines

for students with accommodations

Option 1: Upload a PDF of an existing quiz or test onto Canvas as a quiz. Students digitally submit work via file upload or photo into Canvas. 1. Use Speed Grader in Canvas

or download all student submissions 2. View each student's submission and grade as you normally would 3. Markup student submissions and upload to each student's submission 4. Enter grades for the exam in the Canvas quiz

Option 2: Hybridize an existing quiz or test: Integrate some questions into a Canvas quiz, while others remain manually submitted via a quiz file/photo upload. For questions in Canvas: 1. Some of these questions can

be automatically graded (such as multiple choice and true/false)

For questions submitted via file upload: 1. Follow the instructions for

option 1 (column to the left)

Option 3: Create the entire quiz or test in Canvas.

Some questions in Canvas can be automatically graded and student scores recorded in the gradebook
