How to Block YouTube
YouTube’s library of videos includes those that may be inappropriate for kids. If you want to control your family’s Internet usage by blocking YouTube, you can block a portion or all the videos on your computer or device.

Method 1 of 3: Blocking YouTube on a Windows PC

Start your computer. Open Windows Explorer under the Programs section of the Start menu.

Go to the C Drive or the drive on which Windows is installed. Find the following folder location “Windows\System32\drivers\etc.”

Select “Hosts.” You will be editing the host file, a process that should be done sparingly and with caution.

Wait for the computer to ask you which program you would prefer to open the file in. Choose Notepad.
o You can also open Notepad and navigate to the host file in “Windows\System32\drivers\etc.”

Scroll down to the bottom of the host file. It should read “::1 localhost” or something similar. Place your cursor after the last bit of text.

Press “Enter.” You will add a line to the local host file. Type “127.0.0.1” with one space between the local host number and the website.
o Repeat the same process with any other websites you want to block. For instance “127.0.0.1 . Make sure you place it on a new line.

Navigate to the File menu and select “Save.” Your changes to the host file will now be active.
o You may need to allow these changes under your anti-virus program.

Method 2 of 3: Enabling YouTube Safety Mode

Sign into your Google account. Once you are signed in, Google should automatically recognize your account when you access Gmail, YouTube or other Google products in your browser.

Scroll to the bottom of the page. Find the button that reads “Safety Mode: Off.” Click “Off” to turn it on. [2]

Read the restrictions that Safety Mode will place on your account. For instance, it will restrict adult-restricted YouTube content from any computer on which you are signed into your Google account. Click the radio button that says “On” if you want to block only potentially objectionable YouTube videos.
o YouTube uses a crowd-sourced flagging method to mark content that may not be suitable for children. If the video is brand new and has never been flagged, it may show up on the site.

Press the Save button to save your changes. Stay logged into your YouTube account on the computer to enjoy the features.

Method 3 of 3: Blocking YouTube on an iPad

Go to your Settings application on your iPad. Scroll through the General settings.

Find the options for “Restrictions.” Tap it to enable the iPad restrictions.

Set a passcode that you will use to override restrictions. Enter it again.
