[pic]PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Hi Everyone:

I just wanted to thank all of you for such a productive dinner meeting in September. We had a great meeting with District Director Melissa Wieand and Assistant District Director Jennifer Van Ingen.

During this meeting we agreed to change our October meeting to October 29, 2018 due to the President and Vice President not being available. My sister Margie and I leave for our cruise on October 20th. I can’t wait.

Since our meeting was rescheduled our guest speaker was unable to make the new date.

Hopefully she will be able to speak with us at our January meeting.

PLEASE KEEP NOVEMBER 10, 2018 FROM 1:00 TO 5:00 ON YOUR CALENDARS FOR OUR WINE TASTING YWCA CHARITY EVENT.

Hope to see all of you at the October meeting and have a great rest of the month.

Fire Prevention Week – OCTOBER 7 – 13, 2018

In a fire, seconds count. Seconds can mean the difference between residents of our community escaping safely from a fire or having their lives end in tragedy.

• Smoke alarms provide an early warning of a fire, giving people additional time to escape.

• Working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in a reported home fire in half.

• Three in every five home-fire deaths result from fires in homes with no smoke alarms (38%) or no working smoke alarms (21%).

• When smoke alarms fail to operate, it is usually because batteries are missing, disconnected, or dead. Dead batteries caused one-quarter (24%) of the smoke alarm failures.

• Interconnected smoke alarms throughout the home increase safety. When one sounds, they all sound. It is especially important to have interconnected alarms if you sleep with the door closed.

OCTOBER IS DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH

Domestic Violence is defined as the victimization of an individual or individuals resulting from abuse, attacks, or assault undertaken by their respective partners within the realm of a romantic relationship or courtship. That being said, domestic violence as a general term, is difficult to address, due to the many natures of the act; domestic violence may not only take place within a variety of settings, but also through the involvement of a vast array of individuals victimized, as well.

Domestic violence can be delivered as a physical, emotional, verbal, sexual or psychological attack. In addition to these various fashions, acts of domestic violence can be initiated on both partners, meaning both the male and female of a relationship.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month

In 1995, the National Resource Center on Domestic Violence—a leading organization aimed at preventing domestic violence cases and educating those who are victims of domestic violence—convened other organization, such as the Family Violence Prevention Fund, The National Domestic Violence Hotline, The National Network to End Domestic Violence and the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence in an effort to support such programs’ education and awareness efforts. Collectively these organizations join together in the month of October, which is the nationally recognized Domestic Violence Awareness Month, to educate the masses concerning domestic violence.

One of the primary objectives of the organizations involved in Domestic Violence Awareness Month is to encourage those victims or loved ones of victims to contact authorities or hotlines to make their cases known.

In the event that you or a loved one has been made aware of an ongoing case of domestic violence, or has been party to domestic violence that has occurred in the past, you are encouraged to contact your local authorities or law enforcement department in order to report the details of the offense.

If you wish to report the actions in an anonymous fashion, you may contact the appropriate government department, such as the National Domestic Violence Hotline through their 24-hour telephone number: (800) 799-7233. Remember, no one deserves to be victimized by Domestic Violence; a multitude of resources and assistance exist to prevent these unfortunate acts.

[pic] NATIONAL DISABILITY EMPLOYMENT AWARENESS MONTH

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy announced that “Inclusion Drives Innovation” will be the theme of National Disability Employment Awareness Month in October 2018.

“Americans of all abilities must have access to good, safe jobs,” said U.S. Secretary of Labor Alexander Acosta. “Smart employers know that including different perspectives in problem-solving situations leads to better solutions. Hiring employees with diverse abilities strengthens their business, increases competition, and drives innovation.”

Every October, NDEAM celebrates individuals with disabilities and their contributions and achievements to the American workforce. In 1945, Congress declared the first week of October as ‘National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week.’ In 1962, the word “physically” was dropped to acknowledge individuals with all types of disabilities. In 1988, Congress expanded the week to a month and changed the name to NDEAM. In 2001, ODEP was established and formally began selecting the NDEAM theme.

[pic] OCTOBER IS NATIONAL WORK & FAMILY MONTH

October 2018 is National Work and Family Month. This designation was first made by a resolution of the U.S. Senate in 2003 and has been reaffirmed by both houses of Congress. In 2010, President Obama issued a presidential statement on National Work and Family Month.

National Work and Family Month is designed to communicate and celebrate the progress towards creating healthier and more flexible work environments. The goal of the campaign is to remind employers about the business benefits of supporting work-life effectiveness programs. Work-family balance is a concept involving proper prioritizing between work/career and family life. It includes issues relating to the way how work and families intersect and influence each other. At a political level, it is reflected through policies such maternity leave and paternity leave. (With material from: Wikipedia) This text has been taken from cute-
