IF YOUR SCHEDULE IS FLEXIBLE, AND YOU COULD PLAN TO COME WITH EVEN ONE DAY’S NOTICE, ASK TO BE FIRST ON THE WAITING LIST FOR ONE OF THE DAYS THAT THE SCHEDULE IS FILLED. PLAN TO FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS, INCLUDING THE DIET FOR THE DAY BEFORE THE TESTING DAY. THIS WILL HELP YOU TO HAVE YOUR TEST SOONER. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO DO THIS, LOOK AT THE LIST OF UPCOMING BREATH TESTING DAYS ON THE WEBSITE AND CONTACT THE SCHEDULER:For North OC patients-Fullerton: 714-446-5831 ext 1322 For South OC patients- Mission Viejo: 949-364-5090 ext 1469 Prior to the day of the test:1. 4 weeks before: No colonoscopy, barium x-ray studies, high colonic enemas 2. 4 weeks before: No oral or injected antibiotics 3. 1 week before: Unless instructed otherwise, discontinue laxatives such as bisacodyl or senna, prescription medications for constipation including Amitiza, Linzess, Trulance or Movantik, or other agents including Miralax, mineral oil, or stool softeners. If a week is too long for you to stop your laxative, then stop it 3 days before the test.4. 5 days before: Unless instructed otherwise, discontinue probiotics or prebiotics (including fiber supplements, Bimuno, etc.)On the day of the test: 1. No cigarette smoking or exposure to secondhand cigarette smoke at any time 2. No sleeping for at least 1 hour before and remain awake during the breath test3. You may continue proton pump inhibitors such as Aciphex, Prilosec, Nexium, Prevacid, Dexilant, Zegerid or any generic proton pump inhibitor such as omeprazole, esomeprazole, or pantoprazole prior to the breath testing, and continue all other medications as usual. 4. Take medications that must be taken before the test at least 2 hours before. Take those medications with water, not with juices or sodas.5. No vigorous exercise for at least 1 hour before and during the breath test6. Brush your teeth in the morning before the breath test.7. Lactulose breath tests are 2 hours long, fructose and lactose tests are 3 hours. Do not eat until after the test is over. You may sip water during the test.Diet to follow before the test:Stop eating 12 hours before the time you are scheduled to arrive for the test-usually 7:30 PMThe big picture: Avoid gas-forming foods such as beans, asparagus, Brussel sprouts, and stop eating 12 hours before your test arrival time (7:30 PM the night before your test, usually). Plan to eat a restricted diet that does not include much complex carbohydrates or sugars. plain and flavored water, black coffee, plain tea (do not add any sugar or artificial sweeteners or any milk, half-and-half or creamers)plain steamed white rice, or if that gives you bloating and gas, instead have oats or some other carbohydrate that you tolerate well, along with meat, fish or other seafood, poultry, clear meat broth, eggs, or whatever vegan protein source you like other than beans. You may have olive oil, butter or vegan butter, margarine, salt or pepper. Avoid having onions or garlic.After dinner, beginning 12 hours before your test arrival time, have water only, no gum, mints or candies.Below are suggested menus: Omnivores (people who eat food of both plant and animal origin)B-Rice cereal with rice milk, eggs, 1 bananaL-Plain turkey or canned tuna, or other cooked fish, with a little mayonnaise with rice cakes or cooked white rice, salt and pepper OK, chicken rice soupD-Chicken or broiled fish with white rice or rice-based noodles, rice cakes, salt and pepper OKAvoid breads, beans, vegetables, other fruits that day. Vegans (people who eat food of only plant origin)White rice or rice noodles, seitan (gluten protein), 1 banana, rice cakes, rice milk, vegetable broth with rice or rice noodle soup, salt and pepper OK. Avoid breads, beans, vegetables, other fruits that day. PLEASE AVOID the following foods starting 24 hours before the breath test: No grains (wheat, rye, barley or gluten-free breads or pastas), potatoes, quinoa, corn, tapioca, yams or other starches. If rice causes you to have bloating, you can eat oatmeal or a small serving of some other carbohydrate if you tolerate that better.No fruit (except 1 banana) or fruit juices, no vegetables, no vegetable juicesNo dairy products, especially yogurt or kefir, or milk substitutesNo Ensure, Boost or other high calorie drinks, shakes, smoothiesNo nuts or seedsNo legumes (beans, chickpeas (Garbonzo beans) or hummus, lentils, peasNo soy products including tofu, artificial meats made with soyNo spices, condiments, herbs ................
