Subject: UPDATE and recap of 5-13-19 UPC child care parent meetingAwilda Bregand and Nancy Martiz of USC Benefits provided information and answered questions.Closure scheduleClosure is scheduled from July 1-August 9. At this time, the center is scheduled to reopen for all ages on Monday August 12. Reopening will be in phases:First – Portables ABA and ABX re-opening August 12. Will be licensed to accommodate all age groups. All existing families expected to be accommodated in phase 1.Second – Honors House re-opening early fall. Needs new furniture and some bathroom upgrades to improve supervision capabilities.Last – Severance House re-opening TBD. Space is currently used only for storage and will be licensed to expand the center capacity. Why such a long closure? USC initially believed a closure would be limited to just a few days, but when Bright Horizons conducted a facility walkthrough they found many improvements were needed:Deep cleaning and trash disposalPaintingCrib replacementFurniture set upReconfiguring classrooms in portables (may be able to expand toddler and infant capacities based on square footage)New license application by Bright Horizons (licensing will be completed a bit differently to accommodate 272 children; only 140 children are being served currently)Bright Horizons will also:Conduct onsite sessions for parentsHire new teachers (see more on this below)USC Benefits and Capital Construction will also: Improve securityAdd cameras throughout the facilityAdd PA systemAdd new card readers throughout the facilityIntegrate all phone/IT to connect to main systemPossibly reconfigure entrancesBright Horizons was also asked if there was any chance of opening sooner than August 12; they will try, and update us of any changes.Interim care optionsSee the UPC child care webpage for back-up care information. Back-up care includes at-home care, in-center care, or placement at the Steve and Kate summer camps. Each family is granted 20 days of back-up care; more days can be granted upon request Back-up care is considered emergency care and can only be booked 30 days in advance USC is working with Bright Horizons to potentially accommodate pre-school children within their downtown LA back-up care center.Due to the difficulty of finding infant care throughout all centers in Los Angeles, infant families are encouraged to consider the alternative care reimbursement options (see below).Status of Bright Horizons centers at HSC still unknown due to structural issues; therefore there is limited enrollment availability. If parents wish to share child care option ideas, please send to Nancy Martiz at martiz@usc.edu.ReimbursementAll current families affected by the closure are eligible for reimbursement for child care costs above their normal tuition Other cases will be reviewed on an individual basisReceipts and a copy of your care agreement should be sent to Nancy Martiz at martiz@usc.edu; reimbursement will be direct deposited if parents are signed up for direct deposit in Workday (takes about seven days)Teacher hiringTeachers are expected to be hired by early to mid-July; current teachers will not necessarily know by June 30 due to the time it takes to vet, background screen, interview, etc. all applicants. Benefits has shared parent concern over this uncertainty with Bright Horizons and requested a more detailed recruitment action plan. Tuition ratesBright Horizons is working on these figures, but they will depend on the number of children who enroll at reopening, new licensed capacity, and final cost of lunch catering (see below). USC is working to keep tuition affordable to all. Note that the new tuition rate only applies to new families, not those currently enrolled or on wait list.Lunch optionsThe parent survey showed that most want a lunch option, so new food options are being explored.Part time enrolleesSchedule has not been finalized, but the part-time schedules of families currently enrolled part-time will be honored New families will be offered either Monday-Wednesday-Friday or Tuesday-ThursdayPart-time schedule options for waitlisted families will be discussed with Bright Horizons Continued updatesWe will continue to update parents regularly as we get additional information. Please contact Awilda or Nancy at any time with questions or concerns.
