T.S. Leopard History23rd May 1962 Perry Barr Unit opens in Dorrington School – Lt. H. White RNR Commanding Officer – Affiliates with H.M.S. Leopard due to the fact it launched on the 23rd May 1955.1962 Girls Nautical Training corps joins the unit under First Officer Dorothy Warble WRNR wife of then C/O Lt Commander Warble RNR.1967 Marine Cadet Detachment is formed.1972 LT Jim Morgan takes command – unit strength is 40 blue jackets and twenty marines. 1976 Unit leaves Dorrington School and finds its permanent home on Kingsdown Ave in a deal with Birmingham City Council and British Waterways. Lt Bill Simmons RNR is in command at the time of the move.1977 H.M.S. Leopold is broken up and our affiliation ends. Parents and Friends association is formed to raise money for the unit.The next eleven years sees two more C/O’s LT Alan Kenning RNR and LT Commander Ron Roberts RNR. Dave Ward rebuilds the Unit and we buy our first Minibus.1985 Unit reaches the finals of the National Regatta for the first time 1986 LT John Bayliss RNR takes command after being promoted from First LT.1987 Bayliss promoted to LT Commander.!987 Our Silver Jubilee celebrated at the Council House the Unit is presented with a cut glass rose bowl with the city’s seal on. Unit competes and does well in Football, Drill, Pulling, Swimming and Seamanship.1988 Junior Section Starts. Our affiliation with HMS Olympus starts with LT Jim Gooch RNR at the helm. Olympus is sold to the Canadian Navy which prompts an amazing 24,000 mile round trip to Canada to visit it.Year Uncertain – Cadets help open the latest Unit T.S. Leopard along with The Duke of York Prince Andrew.1990 Work starts on creating the Wardroom.1994 Wardroom completed with a boat repair and workshop section.1998 Affiliation with H.M.S Blackwater ends a year after we visit her due to being sold to the Brazilian Navy.1999 Marines wins runner up prize in the prestigious Gibraltar Cup. Keith Wild steps down as chairman.2000 Marines gain runners up place 2nd year running.2002 Queens Golden Jubilee medals awarded to staff. 23rd May Unit celebrates its 40th anniversary with a ceremonial parade in front of the Lord and Lady Mayor of Birmingham. Longest serving C/O Lt CMDR Bayliss leaves after being promoted to Assistant Area Officer. CPT Fitzgerald takes charge for a while before being replaced with CPO Hayes.2005 Marines win Gibraltar Cup2010 After a brief spell under the Command of PO Allcock CPO Hayes once again takes over as C/O2011 We make the tough decision to leave the Sea Cadets whose rules and regulations are getting to the stage where training is so restricted we can’t even canoe on the canal. We join the newly established Navy Training Corps2012 We discover that the Navy Training Corps are equally as bad as the Sea Cadets when it comes to rules and regulations so T.S. Leopard strikes out on its own under the new and independent Maritime Youth Group. With CMDR Hayes as C/O.2013 After some staffing changes we settle with Captain Rabone as C/O with highly qualified and experienced new staff joining the group we are now able to offer a varied and high level of training.2014 After much debate all staff agree to relinquish all ranks in order for the focus to be solely on the young people that attend, the only staff appointment is now the Chief Instructor and all instructors are known as staff. Staff Whittle is appointed first Chief Instructor of the Maritime Youth Group. ................
