Bond Issue Vote Coming May 10

by Roger Gossen, BRONC advisor

Kremlin-Hillsdale School patrons will have the opportunity to improve the quality of life for KHS students when they vote on May 10 for a transportation bond issue. KHS is currently using two older busses on routes and is in dire need of two new busses. In addition, a suburban-type vehicle is needed to hall smaller groups of students such as cheerleaders, track or academic teams. The Expedition, which is the newest such vehicle currently in use, has almost 100,000 miles on it. The “new” suburban, a 2000 model, has many more miles on it. These vehicles often carry students on long road trips and need to be reliable. Your vote will greatly enhance the safety of students on trips and on regular, daily routes. Superintendent Steve Hoffsommer, the school board, the staff, and the students of KHS all request that you vote on May 10 for a safer future for Kremlin-Hillsdale School. Thank you.

Mr. Hoffsommer has included more information about the bond issue in the Superintendent news on page 3.

“Broadway Revue” was Smashing Success!

Approximately 235 people enjoyed the KHS Drama Department’s spring musical called Broadway Revue. The cast and crew of 40 students and teachers performed three shows in two nights (Monday night dinner theater and Tuesday night dinner theater followed by a dessert theater). Over $1500 was raised for the drama department for future endeavors. Thanks to all who performed and all who came to watch and cheer. A good time was had by all! A special thanks to Kaylene Toelle and Nicole Rihn for their time and effort in putting the show together.

Libby Fosmire, KHS senior, received a I rating at the OSSAA State vocal music competition on Thursday, April 21.

School Mall Fundraiser

Way to go KHS elementary students!! We raised $1050 with the School Mall Fundraiser. We will be purchasing some smart board programs with this money. Great job students and parents! Mrs. Carson’s Pre-K class brought the most booklets and won the Popsicle Party.

Box tops and Labels for Education

Congratulations to Mrs. Reinschmiedt's fifth grade class for winning the April Pizza Party. They brought 1061 box tops and labels for education. Way to go fifth grade. We are having another contest between the elementary classes. The class that brings the most Box Tops and Labels for Education will get a pizza party in May. Right now it is really close between Mrs. Meyer's second grade and Mrs. Chesser's sixth grade. We also need to collect Labels for Education. Superintendent news

by Steve Hoffsomer

On May 10th, a $200,000 bond issue will be placed before the patrons of the Kremlin-Hillsdale School District to address current transportation needs. Our school district currently runs five bus routes each day. Three of those buses are 2006 models. The other two buses were purchased in 2000 and need to be replaced as maintenance costs to keep them operable are increasing each year.

Out of concern for increasing taxes on our patrons, we have tried to squeeze as many years out of these buses as we can. However, the school board members and administrators feel it is time to address this situation now, both for safety and maintenance reasons, and not begin the next school year with two eleven year old buses transporting our students on a regular basis.

If our patrons approve the bond issue, which must pass by at least sixty percent of the vote, we will purchase two route buses which will cost just under $80,000 each. The remaining proceeds will be used to purchase a Suburban type vehicle. This vehicle would be used to help transport students to Autry Tech, haul band equipment to competitions, transport cheerleaders to away ballgames, and transport students to other school events such as academic contest. If the bond issue passes, we could have these new vehicles ready to use as spare buses, to be used when the regular route buses are in the shop or whenever two or three away activities fall on the same day.

The bond issue is for five years and will pay out in fiscal year 2015-2016. Patrons will vote at their polling precincts, which are located not only in the cities of Kremlin and Hillsdale, but also Carrier, Nash, Pond Creek, Hunter, Breckenridge, Golden Oaks, and Enid Mennonite Brethren Church. The polls will be open from 7:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m.

Mrs. Nicole Rihn

by Libby Fosmire

Mrs. Nicole Rihn started teaching at Kremlin-Hillsdale in the fall of 2007. It was her first time to teach any classes lower than American Literature (English III.) After her first year of teaching, Tim Stein and Libby Fosmire convinced her to join forces with Mrs. Kaylene Toelle to create the KHS Drama Club. This was something that she never expected to do. However, it has been a great success both for the school at large and the students that have participated.

At the end of this year, KHS will say goodbye to a wonderful teacher. She will be relocating to OKC this summer with her husband, Andy, and son, Sam. Thank you, Mrs. Rihn, for everything you have done for our student body. We will never forget you. Break a leg in the next act of the play that is your life!

Trivia Challenge 2011

A team of Enid High teachers defeated the Provine team (called the Watsons) in sudden death to claim the title “Champions of Trivia” for 2011. Seventeen teams started the evening in pool play. KHS National Honor Society and academic team members helped write the questions and acted as moderators, judges, scorekeepers and timers for the fun evening.

An All Star team was named consisting of Aaron Randall (from Burlington), John Crockett (Enid High), Max Fosmire (KHS alum), and Eli Taylor (Garber alum). Thanks to all who participated and watched the fun. Over $600 was raised for KHS academic teams!

After Prom

by Melissa Wallace

“After Prom” was really fun! The party started at midnight at the KHS new gymnasium and lasted until 3:00 am. We had lots of food and played lots of silly games including “glow-in-the-dark” dodgeball! They divided us into four different groups by colors: blue, green, yellow, and orange. We also got really cool “after prom” shirts and the juniors and seniors received a cash gift and a Sonic gift card. I think everyone had a really good time and can’t wait til next year. Thanks to all the parents who worked to put it on. Also thanks to those who donated prizes, food, and money for the “After Prom” party.

Pittsburg Math Relays

KHS math teacher Roger Gossen took six students to the 43rd annual Pittsburg State University Math Relays, the oldest such event west of the Mississippi River. This is the 27th consecutive year that KHS has participated in the Relays. Thirty-five schools with about 700 students participated in the “small school” division. An additional 20 schools were in the “large school” division. Senior Libby Fosmire competed in Trigonometry, Functions, and Potpourri. Juniors Gretchen Wuerflein and Mandy Schroeder both competed in Graphing, Potpourri, and Programming; junior Kierstin Copage was in Algebraic Equations & Inequalities, Geometry, and Potpourri. Sophomore Ricki Schroeder competed in Algebraic Simplifications, Geometry, and Potpourri. Sophomore Christina Meyer competed in Algebraic Equations & Inequalities, Algebraic Simplifications, and Geometry. Gretchen, Mandy, Ricki, and Christina made up the Algebra Medley Team also.

There were no medal winners, but three students placed in the top ten which is quite an accomplishment considering the level of the competition. Gretchen placed in ALL three of her individual events, tying for 6th in Graphing, 6th in Programming, and tying for 8th in Potpourri. Mandy placed 7th in Programming. Ricki tied for 8th in Potpourri. Students compete within their own grade level.

The math relays is a two-day trip including fun times at the Independence, KS, zoo and playground, playing games together, and eating at Montana Mike’s steak house on the way home. The sophomores and juniors look forward to going again next year!

JH Tournament of Champions

Five KHS students participated in the junior high Tournament of Champions at Redlands Community College on Friday, April 15. NHS news

by Danielle Stonebrerg

The school year is coming to a close and soon the hallways and lockers of KHS will be empty. On April 4th the KHS and the NHS held a blood drive in the new gym. It was a success with 18 potential donors, 14 were able to give, but in the coming up fall we are hoping to get more donors. We hope that more donors, specifically 16 and 17 year olds weighing at least 125 lbs. will also donate because the Oklahoma Blood Institute has passed new rules. On May 9th the NHS induction ceremony will be held in the cafeteria at 6:00p.m. The five new inductees are Bryce Gannon, Christina Meyer, Jennifer Pekrul, Ricki Schroeder, and Samantha Stoneberg.

STUCO news

From a food drive to Pennies for Patients, this year has been a good year for STUCO at KHS. Pennies for Patients occurred in the month of March. The winners were: elementary-1st and 3rd, middle school-6th and high school-12th. The high school did a different form of collecting; the silver would deduct money from the class total. As a total (without the silver coins from high school) KHS raised over $900. Also, the elections were held in the past week and the winners were: Ricki Schroeder for Vice President and Jennifer Pekrul for Secretary.

FFA news

by Jessica Martin

The most recent activity in our ag program is public speaking. We only had two participating students in it, Ryan Voth and Lakan Light. Ryan received 4th place at the Cimarron speech contest. Ryan does just about anything in general, she recites the FFA Creed. Lakan Light received 1st at the Enid PI contest, and placed 5th at districts. These two girls took time out of a few other things they were involved in to participate in these contests. They came before school and even stayed after school to work on their speeches.

Labor Auction

The Kremlin-Hillsdale FFA held a labor auction April 13th. This event was a major success. The FFA would like to thank all its members that participated that night, and thank all farmers and other citizens of our community that made it a success. We appreciate all the people that spent their money that night whether it was to buy someone, something, or just donate. The help of our community has made it possible for our FFA to step up and be a part of something bigger than itself.

Upcoming Events:

The Kremlin-Hillsdale FFA is holding the 6th Annual FFA Banquet on May 10th. If you are planning on coming please RSVP by May 4th. This is planned to be a very eventful night, you don’t want to miss out! You can call the high school office or sign the RSVP sheet in Mrs. Helm’s office.

This summer we are getting together and painting the hallways in the high school and the bathrooms, and cleaning up things making our school look better. We’re excited for next year because we’ll be juniors and we get to plan prom and other things that’ll be really fun. And we want to wish luck to the 2011 seniors and hope everyone has a great summer!
