Principal’s Message

Happy New Year! I hope you had a wonderful winter break with your family. The year is off to a great start. Please remember that the 2017-2018 Calendar has been amended due to Hurricane Irma. I have attached a copy for you to review and mark important dates on your calendar.

This month we will be celebrating literacy. Each day during the week of January 22nd our staff and students will engage in a fun activity that will promote the love of reading. Please see the attached flier with the specific days and activities.

It is very important for me to remind you that students should not arrive on campus before 7:00AM each day. There is NO supervision until 7:00AM and students do not enter for breakfast until 7:15AM. Please be advised that students arriving before supervision hours is a cause for concern and will be handled accordingly. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this matter, please contact me as soon as possible.

Thank you for your support at our school related events. Just a reminder that a hardcopy of our School Improvement Plan can be found on our school’s website and hard copies at the front desk. We look forward to seeing you at this month’s events.

Mrs. Sharonda Bailey

In Science, we will continue to think like a scientist, using our five senses and inquiry skills to ask questions and observe the world around us. Also, we will be learning about the Earth’s resources, rocks, water, and changes in the Earth as well as famous scientists like meteorologist June Bacon-Bercey. We will also learn about motion and force and how they affect the way things move.

In Social Studies, we will learn about the world around us and world traditions.

In Writing, we are writing complete sentences and exploring the use of adjectives, verbs, and nouns.

In Reading, we are working on comprehension strategies such as, Sequence of Events, Cause & Effect, Conclusions, Compare & Contrast, which, are important to improve reading comprehension. In phonics we are working on spelling words that contain –th, -ch, -tch –sh, -wh, -ph, -ake as well as words ending in -s, -es, -ed, -ing. First graders continue to be technology savvy as they continue to utilize IPads and laptops to facilitate learning.

We are Learning...

As first graders draws near to the end of the second quarter and are eager to learn what the third quarter curriculum has to offer. Here is where our curriculum is taking first graders.

In Math, we are working on how to count by ones to 120 and how to count by tens to 120. We will also learn how to show tens and ones up to 50 and then 100. We will continue to solve addition, subtraction and word problems by working the numbers from 10 - 120.
