GoalEvidence-Based SEL Programs and Practices?The SEL team is in the process of collaboratively selecting an evidence-based program aligned to the school’s vision and goals, and cultural and linguistic strengths.Harbordale’s current SEL program utilizes various evidence-based SEL programs. Currently, we employ Sanford Harmony, Zones of Regulation, and Start With Hello on a consistent basis. During the first week of school, teachers are given SEL lesson plans that center on each of these 3 programs and deliver a lesson that is grade-appropriate.On Mondays, all teachers participate in Mindful Minutes and use the Conversation Decks from their Sanford Harmony Kits to engage their class in a 10-minute discussion. Each classroom has a Zones of Regulation corner, with posted signs of each color and its description. Teachers do zone-checks with students every morning, as well as throughout the day. 5th grade students use Start With Hello as the basis for their Peace Rangers (Peer Mentors) club. They act as ‘peace ambassadors’ and conduct weekly club activities that promote inclusion, friendship, and tolerance, including, but not limited to Lunch Bunches, Friendship Fridays, and the Shout It Out Box.?The school is beginning to provide professional learning around an evidence-based SEL program aligned to the school’s SEL vision and goals, and cultural and linguistic strengths.Action Steps?The school is implementing with fidelity an evidence-based SEL program, practicing across all grade levels, and providing ongoing implementation support to staff. Program and practices are aligned to the school’s SEL vision and goals and are culturally- and linguistically responsive to students. Currently, we have Peace Rangers, Student Council, Safety Patrol, Recycling Club, Porpoises with a Purpose, and Kindness Ambassadors. These clubs are available to 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students. A goal is to create opportunities for primary students to engage in similar activities.?Students are offered many opportunities to take on leadership and decision-making roles that inform SEL initiatives, instructional practices, and school climate.
