Hello Dillard High,

Welcome to another Media Center update. I have gotten behind on sending them every two weeks and I figure monthly updates might be more effective, anyway.  So my next update will be some time in February. As usual, I have divided it into easily accessible sections for better readability (and skimming, if you’re in a hurry).

Contact Reminder

Because of new faculty coming in and to avoid any confusion, I always begin each e-mail with a reminder of how to contact me.  I cannot be reached at the Media number in your directory and extremely rarely reached at the Media Specialist number in your directory.  As I am typically at the circulation desk, the way to reach me by phone is at “Circulation Desk” in your directory and phone list (322-0857),  NOT “Media Specialist”. The best way to reach me is CAB as I typically check it four or five times a day.  Make sure to e-mail Steven A. Marshall (there is a Steven K. Marshall at Sheridan Tech).

Upcoming Media Center Closures

Every now and then the Media Center is scheduled to be used for other purposes and closed to students. I will start noting those dates ahead of time in these e-mails (I will always post a sign on the door the day before, to give students some advanced warning).  As a reminder, I am closed every day during 6th & 7th period for my lunch and planning (classes can still use the Media Center during these times) and will be closed during one lunch period if a class if using it at that time. That all said, the Media Center will be closed all or most of the day on the following dates:

FRIDAY JANUARY 22, 2016 (Closed Before School as well for district-wide ZPAC meeting, the Media Center will re-open if the meeting ends before 12:45).

MONDAY FEBRUARY 8, 2016 (Closed during school for a health screening)

Notices in Mailboxes

At the beginning of last week, I placed notices in teacher’s mailboxes. Some of them are obligation notices (which I distribute on a monthly basis) and others are just notices about the arrival of books on hold, volunteer information or winning prizes. These notices are just for purposes of communication, they are not a pass. During class, they must have a teacher’s permission.

Media Center availability

As of now, I have no more days in January. I still have most of February available, however. Days fill up quickly, so please let me know as far in advance as you can. You can e-mail me, call me or talk to me in person to schedule your classes for the Media Center.  If you are unable to come please contact me as soon as possible, so I may attempt to give another teacher Media Center time. You can see the Media Center schedule on DHS Media Calendar on CAB.

SIRS & other research databases

I have noticed a lot of students still trying to do research through Google. I know that in spite of trying to teach them research methods, many will still go back there as a default, but I still want to promote reliable resources. I’ve been guiding them to Dillard’s Destiny homepage (from , scroll down the list of schools to “High schools” and click on “Dillard High”) generally and SIRS Issues Researcher specifically (under “Databases”).  I know a number of you already use and have shown students this resource, but a refresher wouldn’t hurt.  It’s especially useful for argumentative essays and debate topics as it includes a list of controversial topics and issues that is updated weekly and includes reliable resources both for and against ethical questions within a topic. It includes citations in multiple formats and other related resources to articles, including timelines, statistics and graphic organizers. They can access it away from school with theusername:bcs0371 and the password: broward.

Media Center Orientation Survey Results

Between September and November, I did a student survey among all classes that were doing Media Center orientations as well as select other classes. I have attached the results as a Word document to this e-mail. The survey has some issues which I have noted in the results, but I still feel it’s a good gauge of the overall climate.

Student Recognition

Since the last Media Center update, there have been a number of students that I would like to recognize for their contributions to and/or use of the Media Center.  I have sent notes to their second period teachers about receiving prizes. Please give them kudos for their achievements and contributions to the Media Center.

January Media Center Books of the Month

The January Media Center books of the month are Variant by Robison Wells (Middle School) and When I was the greatest by Jason Reynolds (High School).  Students will receive a prize if they tweet about either of those books and mention the Media Center in the tweet. I will be promoting these books to students and have summarized them below.   About Variant: Benson is a foster kid who thinks winning a scholarship to Maxfield Academy is a lottery ticket out of his rough life.  It turns out that Maxfield is a mysterious  prison disguised as a school. Even stranger, some of the students don’t want to escape. Benson and some new friends desperately try to find their way out of their new life where nothing is quite what it seems.  The winner of the 2014-15 Sunshine State Young Reader Award (6th-8th grade) is part Maze Runner, part Divergent and part something else entirely. The sequel, Feedback, is also available in the Media Center.

About When I was the greatest: 15-year-old Ali’s Brooklyn neighborhood is filled with drugs and hustlers, but he just focuses on learning how to box, chilling with his tough guy best friend, Noodles, and trying to meet girls. Noodles’ brother, Needles, has Tourette’s syndrome, but Ali and Noodles make sure that everyone on the block knows that he means no harm.   Still, Noodles’ desire to act hard finds the group in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Random Media Center tidbit:

Instead of a tidbit this week, I will leave you with a reminder of the Media Center Hours (for both the benefit of staff and students): Monday 7:00-3:20  Tuesday 8:30-4:45  Wednesday 7:00-2:40  Thursday 7:00-3:20 Friday 7:00-2:40.  (The Media Center is closed between lunches (11:55-12:14), 6th & 7th period and will be closed to other students during Lunch A or B if a class is using it that day).  If there is no school on Monday, the Media Center will be open at 7:00 on Tuesday.  On days when there are no activity buses, the Media Center will close immediately after school.

As always, thank you for reading and for your support.
