FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONSWhat is Bloomington Graduation School?Bloomington Graduation School (B.G.S.) is Monroe County Community School Corporation’s (M.C.C.S.C.’s) alternative high school. B.G.S. is a school of choice for students in the school district and surrounding school communities. B.G.S. offers a small school community, a maximum teacher/student ratio of 1:15, a safe and supportive learning environment, a dedicated and experienced faculty, and both a traditional and an online curriculum.Who can attend B.G.S.?Due to being an alternative school, there is a common misconception that B.G.S. only serves “at-risk” students. While B.G.S. does serve some “at-risk” students, it strives to serve ALL students. However, per the Indiana Department of Education, to qualify as an eligible student at an alternative school (including B.G.S.), a student must meet at least one of the following criteria:Student intends to withdraw or has withdrawn before graduation.Shas failed to comply academically and would benefit from instruction offered in a different manner from the traditional school.Student is a parent or expectant parent.Student is employed and employment is necessary for support.Student is a disruptive student.Where is B.G.S. located?B.G.S. is located at 705 West Coolidge Drive in the Broadview Learning Center (formerly the Broadview Elementary School). We are on the south side of the building. The Adult Education Program utilizes the north side of the building. B.G.S. students, parents/guardians, and families may park on the south or west side of the building and use Door #9 on the west side of the building. How many students go to B.G.S.?The enrollment at B.G.S. differs throughout the school year due to having an open enrollment window and students completing their graduation requirements at various times. B.G.S. served over a hundred students throughout the 2018-2019 school year. We served just under 90 the year before. How big are the classes at B.G.S.?The average class size at B.G.S. is under 10. Maximum class sizes are 15 per the Indiana Department of Education’s requirements of an alternative school. The only exception to this is in our online classroom (PLATO Lab) where there is a teacher and an instructional aide. What is a typical day at B.G.S. look like?The doors open at 7:00 a.m. Students wait in the cafeteria until 8:10 when they are released to their first period. There are two academic class periods throughout the morning followed by our morning tutorial where students can get extra help. Everyone goes to lunch from either 10:50 a.m. to 11:20 a.m. or 11:25 to 11:55 a.m. The 30 minutes students are not in one of those lunches are spent in Dragons Lair – where students receive additional accountability and supports. There are two more academic class periods in the afternoon followed by our afternoon tutorial. All of the academic class periods are 60 minutes in length while the tutorials and S.S.R. are 20 minutes in length. Students are dismissed at 2:30 p.m.Do B.G.S. students have to attend school all day?No. While most students do attend school all day, B.G.S. does provide flexible schedules for a variety of reasons. Some students attend morning classes only, some students attend afternoon classes only, and some students attend for as little as a single class period. Is breakfast and/or lunch provided at B.G.S.?Yes. Both breakfast and lunch are provided at B.G.S. Free and reduced lunches are also available. Additionally, students are welcome to bring in a sack lunch if they prefer. Please note that students are not allowed to leave school to get lunch or have lunch delivered to them.Is transportation available at B.G.S.?Yes. Transportation is available for students that live in Monroe County Community School Corporation (MCCSC). Students can ride a shuttle bus from either Bloomington High School North or Bloomington High School South. Students that live outside of MCCSC are responsible for their own transportation to and from B.G.S. Bloomington Transit drops off and picks up near B.G.S. on the other side of the southwest corner of the park at the corner of Brown and Graham.What extra-curricular activities are offered at B.G.S.?B.G.S. offers a Dungeons & Dragons Club, a Yearbook Club, and a Yoga Club.Additionally, B.G.S. students from Bloomington High School North and Bloomington High School South may participate in extra-curricular activities and sports at their respective school with permission of the sponsor, coach, athletic director, and/or administration. What about prom and graduation?B.G.S. has our own prom. It takes place at the Monroe County Courthouse. Dinner is included in the affordable ticket price. Like in other high schools, students are able to invite guests from other high school with the appropriate administrative approvals.B.G.S. has our own graduation, too. It takes place at Ivy Tech’s Shreve Hall. Like in other high schools, speeches are a big part of the ceremony. However, at B.G.S., every graduate makes a speech thanking those that helped them throughout their school childhood, adolescence, and K-12 career. Is a diploma from B.G.S. different from any other high school diploma?No. A diploma from B.G.S. is as legitimate as a diploma from Bloomington High School North, Bloomington High School South, the Academy of Science & Entrepreneurship, or any other high school in Indiana.How do I enroll at B.G.S.?Go to mccsc.edu/bgs and click on the B.G.S.
