IT SC Meeting January 21 2016.Jon Olsen, BJ Roche, Jerry Schoen, Patricia Galvis-Assmus, Ryan Macdonald, Graham Gal, Rick Adrion, TreaAndrea Russworm, Maria Toyofuku, Traci Hess, Beth Henneman, Nikki StoiaOpen Education Initiative. IT program used $8000 that would have been used for a course buyout (Patricia) to fund 3 courses under the Initiative. eBook iAuthor project.Fred Zinn of Academic Computing has been working with Apple on a project that uses iAuthor. This might be something worth exploring with the IT Program.Beth: Nursing is heavily invested in iPad. All students have them. Nursing does no receive any support from Apple for this. So if there is any $ in such an initiative, we have clients.PGA: Might it be possible to leverage such involvement?Jon also interested. Has written an eBook for his Western Civilization class. Works on Kindle, and other devices. Works with Moodle. Students like it.Beth will contact Fred Zinn.College of Information & Computer Sciences, status of IT programPGA met with Bruce Croft recently. Nothing is changing for the IT program. We will need to do search(es) for Academic Advisor (Ryan is exploring other job opportunities) and Admin Assistant (Jerry is retiring in May)Might be worth pursuing combining into 1 puter Competency CertificationStudent Nathan Pluta has been working on content for the CCC site. PGA has been working with the Center for Educational Software Development (CESD) to build this on OWL.System seems to work, but aesthetics are not great, and there are some glitches. We continue to meet with CESD to decide whether to continue building with OWL or try a different approach (e.g. Drupal). PGA will also meet with someone from University Relations(?) to see if they have a suitable alternative for building the site.Courses submitted for IT program catalogueWe ask all committee members to review this, and let us know if you have any reservations about the decisions made on Jan. 21. Jerry will contact all those who submitted course proposals, with responses as described below. There are 2 categories of courses to consider:1. Those for which financial support is requested of the IT program. (The IT Program recently sent out an RFP for courses that could be recommended for addition to the IT program course offerings.)2. Those to be added to the IT course listing (no financial support requested)Courses asking for $ support. The Art Department requested $6800 each for Art 374 (Computer Animation), Art 384 (Computer Animation II), and Art 385 (Media?Motion?Graphics). There was some concern by the committee regarding the issue of the Art Dept. planning not to rehire the current instructor (Ryan MacDonald) because that would require a continuous reappointment. Committee members thought this would run afoul of University Policy. It was also noted that these courses have been taught for some time – since 2003-2006. The committee voted to deny the request. Jerry will draft a memo to that effect, to be reviewed by PGA, shared with committee, then sent to Alexis Kuhr of Art. LARP course development.Landscape Architecture is seeking support to develop and teach a sophomore level introduction to visual digital technology. They requested $5000 for course development (summer $5000), $8000 to teach the course in fall 2016, and $8000 to teach the course in spring 2017. The committee voted to give LARP $8000 for to teach the course in fall 2016 if LARP will assume course development costs, and to confer with them after fall 2016 about funding for the spring 2017 courseCOMM 499C. This is a 2-semester honors Thesis seminar. 8 credits. $1000 was requested. There are issues associated with the # of credits and the 2 semesters, although it appears that students would be able to drop the course after semester 1 (3 credits).Committee agreed to contact Communications, ask what the IT content is for semester 1, and if that appears sufficient, we would be likely to approve the funding request – and to suggest they ask for $2000. PHIL110 Intro to Logic. Committee approved this as a Foundation Course. History 397ST: Science, Technology, and War in 20th century US and EuropeThis appears to be a history of STEM in that context. It was agreed to respond to the instructor, indicate that we find the course interesting and would like it to be part of our catalogue, but we need to know what is the Information Technology content of the course? Also inquire about what number of IT students might be able to take it. LEGAL 397i. Alternative Dispute Resolution. Committee agreed to approve it as a Broadened Inquiry course. PUBHLTH?667-01 Environmental?&?Occupational?Toxicology?II. This appears to have minimal IT content. Jerry will respond, to ask for more details on what IT content the course contains, ask if it is open to undergrads, and how many undergrads typically, or might take it.Jerry will compile a list of IT courses by category (Tech, Broadened Inquiry, Foundation, Elective) and see what we are short on. We will reissue the RFP this spring, and mention we are particularly interested in courses of those types.Faculty Senate credentials policyIn Feb 2015, the Faculty Senate approved a rule that allows only 2 courses to count towards multiple credentials (e.g. satisfy the IT minor and another credential at the same time). This has proven to be a problem for some IT students. Jerry will send around a copy of the rule, and draft a memo expressing our concern. Will share the draft with Nikki and Traci, send the amended letter to the committee, and upon committee approval, send the letter to Nikki to relay to the relevant body Nikki serves on (I didn’t get the name of the body). Computer Science advising issueIT minor students have been hearing they cannot take CS major and IT minor. Rick says this has been discussed, apparently resolved for now, will undergo further resolution as advising is changing with emergence of the new college.ICT SummitWe decided to take a hiatus for this year – or at least for Spring 2016.We will begin planning for the next summit at our next committee meeting.Future Committee meetingsIt appears that Thursdays or Fridays, around noon, are fairly good days for most members. Jerry will send around a Doodle poll to determine best dates for our next meeting(s). Next one will be sometime in February. ................
