The SSP program educates psychologists with the essential entry-level competencies to serve in the schools by providing a sequential set of experiences which have been planned with reference to the standards and criteria of the National Assn of School Psychologists (NASP) as well as the guidelines for training which have been developed through the collaboration of the directors of university school psychology programs in Illinois, the Illinois State Boad of Education, and the Illinois School Psychologists Assn. The program has an advisory committee consisting of practicing school psychologists, principals, a school superintendent, special education administrators, parents, regular and special education teachers, and related school personnel including a social worker, speech therapist, and guidance counselor which provides input on at least a yearly basis to program faculty regarding training needs for future school psychology practitioners. The program requires a thesis and 63 hours of graduate credit including a year's internship.

However, the Department has specific programmatic options which enable students to develop expertise in a variety of job-related areas. For example,
certified teachers wishing to enhance their effectiveness in the classroom may select from learning/cognitive processes, child and adolescent development, or multicultural/urban education options. Public agency personnel may pursue advanced work in public affairs and community service.

The Instructional Psychology and Technology (IPT) program integrates the traditional fields of educational psychology and educational technology. Educational Psychology contributes knowledge of the internal conditions of learners, the external conditions that affect learning, and the measurement of psychological processes and characteristics. Educational psychology also offers an empirical perspective on the development and assessment of theory. Educational technology contributes the "technology" of analyzing learning tasks, learners' characteristics, and the contexts in which instruction will occur. This analysis is the foundation for designing, developing, producing, implementing, and managing theory-based instructional interventions to promote learning. Degrees Offered:

The Psychology in Education Division provides students with a foundation in the core concepts of psychology, assessment evaluation, human development and field research. We encourage students to engage the challenge of framing major psychological, educational, and social questions well, of identifying and developing evidence bearing on those questions, and of working productively at the level of the individual, the community, the nation, and the world. Our orientation in psychological practice and research is toward learning what in educational contexts works better, when, and why, advancing our understanding of ways to characterize and resolve psychological and social problems, and fostering the use of that knowledge in professional practice and in educational and public policy contexts. Other programs within the division focus on the provision of psychological services (i.e. counseling various age groups). Degrees Offered:

School Psychology at LSU is a small, collegial program which emphasizes a mentorship approach. Each student has intensive and frequent contact with faculty members, particularly his or her major professor. Because the program has a student-faculty ratio of approximately 3:1, abundant opportunity is provided for students to learn directly about being a psychologist instead of merely attending classes.
