DRAMA!!!Written and adapted for the children of St David’s RC Primary SchoolM. Burdon Drama Specialist 22nd April 2020DRAMA GAMES AND EXERCISES TO KEEP YOU BUSY!!!HelloHow are you doing, I wonder? I hope you had a chance to do some of the games and exercises I sent for you. It seems strange to not actually speak to you and hear your stories and see your wonderful scenes! BUT there is plenty here for you to enjoy and work on for yourselves. As with the first set of drama games and exercises, you can work on these on your own, with other children and young people, with the adults in the house or on zoom or something similar if you have it -a whole mixture. Just make sure, as before, that, if people do not want to take part, allow them that and you can enjoy yourself on your own using that wonderful imagination. With a few of the exercises and activities, you may need some materials. Please ask permission and if the materials cannot be provided or found, then do one of the other activities or use your creativity to improvise. That is, find another way, and make it up as you go along !! A bit like life !!!!Let’s get started !!!M. Keeping arms stretched up high and hands clasped, but heels back on ground, so you feel your body stretching. Do that 3 times. And breathe in and out once and relax.……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..Do that again but this time flop down from the waist as you relax so your head is down around your knees your hands and arms and shoulders are flopped down towards the floor. Slowly stand up from the bottom of your spine, very relaxed, with body slowly coming back up to standing with head slowly being raised to look ahead. Do it once to practice, then once again. SLOW……LY so you don’t get dizzy.………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..WORK THAT FACE!!!!Best to not do this at a window or you may scare the neighbours!!!Chew, like you have a small chewy sweet in your mouth.Chew, like you have toffee stuck to your teeth! Stay relaxed. Don’t hurt yourself. Now chew like you have a big plum in your mouth. Now scrunch your face up as small as you can make it, Now as BIG as you can. Do it again. Now (and it’s not often you can do this without getting into trouble ! ) stick your tongue out then in again 4 times! Now – mouth open - make your tongue move side to side outside your mouth 8 times. Now, pretend you have an iced lolly and lick it up the way 8 times. Now take a big yawn, stretch and relax.………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….Breathe and Relax ( this might be better at the end of a session – try it out and see what you think)Lie down on the floor on your back Tighten all your muscles as you breathe in. Hold it for 4.Breathe out and leave out for count of 4.Repeat the above 3 times.Breathe normally, noticing your breath going in and out.………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..Close your eyes.Start to soften your body.Slowly, let go the muscles in your head, your eyes your ears, your jaw, your tongue, your lips, your jaw.Let your body start to feel like it is heavy and going into the floor.Let your neck go soft, let your shoulders go soft and heavy, your arms, hands.Let your back sink into the floor, let your tummy go soft, your hips, your legs, your feet. Let your breathing go softly in and out. If you are not asleep by now you soon might be so quite a good one to do in bed or before bed or if you feel tense. It is also a good one to start to let your mind relax and your imagination come out to play ………………. a kind of dreaming time.So………. Use this time to go on an imaginary walk………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..THE JOURNEY With your eyes closed, take your self off somewhere in your mind. I will guide you through this journey and then give you some other ideas for imaginary walks you can create for yourself. Here goes.A SPRING WALK It is a beautiful Spring day. A child named ( your name) has some time on her hands so decides to go for a walk in the country side. As she walks, she looks to the right and sees wild flowers, trees, a field, some cows ; she looks up and notices the clear blue sky dotted with fluffy white clouds and in the distance a tiny, small aeroplane. Below her feet she says a light coloured, hardened earth path, with one or two stones – different sizes – grey and fawn and cream in colour. To her left, there is a hedge and she notices a sudden movement but not what causes it. She sees a cottage in the distance and some telegraph poles. Ahead there is the curving path and in the distance it has trees on either side. She keeps walking. She can hear the drone of the plane, the slight rustle of the movement of a bird in the hedge, her own breath. She feels the warmth of the Spring sun on her arms, the bumps of the small stones through the soles of her shoes, the air in her nostrils as she breaths inn and out, the blink of her eyelids…… the sharpness of the roadside grass as she trails her fingers through the blades….There is no real smell – just the smell of Spring – maybe some grass, a faint hint of the flowers. Somehow it is also the taste of Spring. Full of hope and memories – oh and the thought of the sandwiches and juice she had in the little bag she carried on her back. She feels happy, content. Alone but not alone – surrounded by the countryside She feels at peace.………………………………………………………………………………………………………………The questions I asked myself wereWhere am I?What do I see? ( Right, left, above, below) What do I hear? What do I smell? What do I taste? How do I feel? Some places you might choose for your imaginary journey…..The Beach; The Football Pitch; The Stage; The Underground Cave – choose your own. Just enjoy it. Or write it as a story. Or a poem. Or when you come to the end…decide what happens next. Who else comes into the story?Turn it into a short scene or play or film. Draw a picture of it. Several pictures.Or just leave it as a lovely journey you took yourself on.NOW………SHOW BIZ !!!!!...................THE TALENT SHOW!!!The Contestants are : A magicianA dancerA comedianA singerA tightrope walker ( pretend)A boy band ( made from puppet – 4 different coloured socks for example) A girl band ( as above or persuade someone to join your band – only ask twice max) A pianist ( or guitarist/ other) As many as you like. The trick is that YOU can play all the contestants. The brilliant thing is you are bound to win!!!!! You can also be the compere. If there is more than one of you, divide up the parts. If there are people in your house who can actually DO all these things – well, all the better!!! Get a costume & an act for each contestant (and the compere) Ask permission for using things for props or costumeNot full costume – just something that says, for example: Magician Wand ( use a pencil / a rolled up bit of paper/ a big spoon, hiding the spoon end!!) Then practice making something or someone “ disappear” Or a card trick. Or a mind reading double act. ( See the end for details ) DancerSomething bright/ highland/sparkly/floaty ( check out Strictly). Any dance you want. Decide if it is ballet/ hip hop/ highland/tango and make it up unless you know the dance already.A ComedianDo something silly with your hair. Tell some (good) jokes. Or tell a story of something funny that happened to you.PianistIf you have one handy that’s great. But… you can mime - or if you can and are allowed look up Lang Lang or Will Pickvance on youtube and mime to the chosen playing style. Or a rock guitarist, Play air guitar ( to music or just thin air!!)Tightrope Walker.DON’T try this for real!!! Just do all the walking back and forward in front of audience. Look up very high. Pretend to climb up rope ladder. Look down behind you as if you are VERY high up. Walk along an imaginary line with your hands out f balance. Wobble a bit. Keep going. Get to the end. Huge relief. Climb down the ladder. Very big bows. Walk proudly off!!! You might even use recorded cheering. If no-one wants to come, this is good practice for if you actually want to be in showbiz. BUT STILL DO IT !!!! Choose your own acts.Perform to pillows dressed as an audience. Make puppets to be the audience. Perform to the mirror. Perform to the wall !!!!Enjoy it. Don’t make it too long. Practice. Does not have to be a contest. Could just be a show. Have fun!!!!…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………Well, that’s about it for this week. I just want to do two things. I want to remind of you of other exercises we have done and which you can find ways to do at home. You won’t all know all of them so just choose ones you do.Here goes :Yes/No 1,2,3You’re FiredKeeper of the KeysWho’s the leader?YES/NOSome of these you need a few people for so choose. With Yes/No if you are on your own, use 2 different coloured socks as puppets, one on each hand, and practise using your own voice to be each puppet, finding different ways to say the Yes and then the No…Beg, persuade, flatter, be sweet, upset etc etc etc. Don’t shout. Don’t touch.Older children might develop this into a whole scene using full dialogue. But do not do that too soon. The aim is using your voice and style of saying no to help with your acting.1, 2,3Two people, turn about to say one number each counting up to 3, and going no higher than 3. Use sock puppets again if no-one else wants to play. Now replace the number 1 with a sound and action. You must both use the same sound and action to replace 1 every time it is your turn to say 1. You can then replace 1, 2 and 3 with their own special sound and action. Great for focus, working together and concentration. Good fun, too.I won’t go over the other 3 games here today. If you remember them you should know how to do them or adapt them. If not, I might go over next week.Overleaf is the second thing I want to do – teach you the mind-reading exercise.DON’T let anyone who might be in the audience see the secret to this trick. That’s all for this week. Keep making up and practising your own stories and scenes.Warm wishes to you all and……Well done!!M. Burdon ( Drama) Mind- Reading Exercise.Needs 2 people and an audience (of one will do).One of the team goes outside. One inside asks audience to tell you one object in the room and say your friend will guess it.Friend comes back in and you point to as many objects as you like and s/he magically guesses the one the audience chose!!!! Build all this up.Audience usually wants to see it again (and again) so they can guess the trick. You say it is not a trick, it is MAGIC.Don’t give away the game – do it on a few occasions IF the audience is interested. Up to you if you finally tell them the secret which is……… WHEN YOUR PARTNER COMES BACK IN THE ROOM, YOU TOUCH ALL SORTS OF OBJECTS, ONE AFTER THE OTHER, SAYING TO YOUR PARTNER – IS THIS IT? IS THIS IT? ETC. FINALLY THEY WILL GUESS THE RIGHT ONE BECAUSE…… THE OBJECT YOU TOUCH BEFORE YOU TOUCH THE CORRECT OBJECT WILL BE THE COLOUR BLACK !!!! EASY !!! THAT’S MAGIC !!!!!M.B. ................
