Required Software Environment for Projects

To complete the projects for this class, you will need to have access to a Unix or Linux system with an up-to-date version of gcc. The projects will be based on the 'C' programming language.

The preferred environment is Knoppix. This is the distro of Linux that will be used for in-class demonstrations and has worked well for students in previous semesters. It is a bootable live CD that does not require any installation on the running host. That is, it can run on your Windows machine without you having to install anything. It can be downloaded free from the Internet (you will need the capability to burn a CD from a .iso file), or the CD can be ordered and shipped by mail to you. Simply Google on "Knoppix" and follow the first link to either download or order. Be sure to download/order the CD version (not DVD) and the EN (English) version. The current version is

KNOPPIX_V7.0.5CD-2012-12-21-EN.iso
