Prof. Dr. jur. Frieder Dünkel, University of Greifswald, Germany

Frieder Dünkel studied law at the universities of Heidelberg and Freiburg/Germany (second state examination in 1976). His Ph.D. in 1979 dealt with an empirical research on the effectiveness of therapeutic treatment in prisons. From 1979 until 1992 he worked as a researcher at the Max-Plank-Institute of Foreign and International Penal Law, Criminological Unit, in Freiburg. The subject of his "Habilitation" in 1989 was "Juvenile imprisonment and other forms of deprivation of liberty in an international comparison". Since 1992 he teaches criminology, penology, juvenile justice, criminal procedure and penal law at the university of Greifswald in the north-east of Germany. Prof. Dünkel is the co-editor of the Journal "Neue Kriminalpolitik" since 1989 and has organised many international conferences.

Marjatta Kaijalainen works currently in the central administration of the Criminal Sanctions Agency in development work concerning the imprisonment act and remand imprisonment act. She is also involved in research work concerning reoffending of lifers. Kaijalainen is Licentiate of Laws, Master of Laws with court training and Master of Science in Economics and Business Administration. She has previously worked for ten years as a prison director both in open and closed prisons in Finland and also as a district prison director for a number of years.

Maarit Suomela works as the development manager in the expert and development unit of Probation Foundation in Helsinki, Finland. She is Master of Psychology and Master of Theology. Suomela has previously worked as study counsellor in Kerava Juvenile Prison and as senior specialist and project manager in the central administration of the Criminal Sanctions Agency.

Kaisa Tammi-Moilanen works as director of Vanaja Prison and Hämeenlinna Community Sanctions Office in Finland. She is Master of Psychology from Helsinki University. She has started her career in the Criminal Sanctions Agency in Pelso Prison first as a prison guard and later worked as psychologist and assistant director. Since 2000 she has worked in Vanaja prison for women in various positions. In 2008 Tammi-Moilanen was awarded the title of Lyyti of the year by The Feminist Association Unioni, for her work for the benefit of female prisoners.

Timo Valkama works as the director of CRIS Finland, Central Union. CRIS (Criminals’ Return Into Society) is an international organisation, which aims to help people released from prison to break the cycle of substance abuse and imprisonment and to reintegrate into society based on the principle of voluntary work and peer support.

Moritz von der Wense studied Law and International Law at the Universities of Greifswald (Germany) and Tartu (Estonia) with a specialisation in Criminology. Since 2012 he is a Ph.D. student and research assistant at the Department of Criminology at the University of Greifswald and since 2013 engaged in the Justice Cooperation Network project. He is currently carrying out empirical research on the structural variance and quality of treatment programmes targeting aggression, social skills and working ability as well as transition management in the youth prisons of four German states and has published articles on Restorative Justice in Latin America and Remand in Russia.

Tiina Vogt-Airaksinen works as senior specialist in the central administration of the Criminal Sanctions Agency of Finland. She has graduated from the university of Helsinki in Political Science with a lower degree in 1988 and a Master’s degree in 2009. After graduating she has worked as social worker and assistant director in Helsinki and Vantaa Community Sanctions Offices. Her main area of expertise is juvenile delinquents as well as released prisoners under supervision.
