PRECONFERENCE ACTIVITIES

DIASPORA GOLF TOURNAMENT, Cinnamon Hill

This novel idea emerging from the Jamaican Diaspora communities in the New York area will see players teeing off on the majestic 18-hole course with a shot gun start at 10 am. The event organised by the Jamaica American Chamber is one of the many business and social networking opportunities at the Conference, which also seeks to raise funds for the Jamaica Children Foundation charity.

CHURCH SERVICES AND FATHERS’ DAY CELEBRATIONS

Many churches in the city and in the Greater Montego Bay area as well as in the neighbouring parish of Trelawny will be having special celebratory services. Delegates may make their own arrangements or consult with the Conference Secretariat in the Negril Room at the Hilton Rose Hall.

A study commissioned by the Canadian Foundation for the Americas (FOCAL) asserts that “the economic and business contributions of Central American and Caribbean citizens living in Canada and the United States are immense and signal a new type of relationship, not only in labour mobility, but also in trade and investment.”

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade seeks to establish progressive International Migration and Development Policies for greater engagement of the Jamaican Diaspora.

Philanthropy and goodwill investments have been synonymous with the Jamaican Diaspora over the years. Nearly 200 registered Diaspora organizations are on record for their sterling contributions to healthcare, education and sports.

This 3-year initiative seeks to create and develop businesses owned by community based organizations and NGO’s – social enterprises. The SEBI has three important opportunities for Diaspora Partnerships:

• Partnering with social enterprises

• Creating business opportunities and market linkages for social enterprises

Two core goals of the Vision 2030 Jamaica National Plan speak to ensuring that Jamaicans are empowered to achieve their fullest potential and that Jamaica has a healthy natural environment. The Diaspora makes significant contributions in Healthcare and Education through social remittances to assist Jamaica to realize these goals. There is need to consolidate social remittances and also expand the opportunities to invest in infrastructure development and services related to two areas:

1. Health: New hospitals; electronic records management for hospitals

2. Education: New schools and refurbishing and upgrading of school buildings and Diaspora expertise towards educational programmes
