Calculating GPA

In this activity, students will learn what a GPA is, why it is important, and how to calculate it.

Instructions

A. Distribute the “Calculating My GPA” worksheet, or refer to the similar GPA chart on page 6 of the KnowHow2GO Handbook. Ask the following questions:

1. What does GPA stand for? Grade Point Average

2. What does a GPA show? This is the average of your grades in all your courses.

3. Why a GPA important? Colleges, scholarship committees, and employers will judge your application based on criteria including your GPA. If you have a high GPA, it shows you worked hard in high school and will do the same in college or a job. If you have a low GPA, those reviewing your application may think you won’t work hard in college or in a job.

4. Calculate GPA.

a. If possible, create a sample grade report and showcase one example of calculating the GPA as a group.

b. Distribute to each student their individual grade report and have them calculate their GPA before responding to the questions after the chart.

5. Watch the “Push Yourself” video showing different college students explaining what they did in high school or what they wish they did in high school.

6. Ask students to move into small groups and respond to the following questions:

a. What was your reaction when you found out your GPA?

b. What are one or two subjects you would like to improve?

c. What is one action step you can take now to improve your GPA?

d. Describe your attitude towards school now. Then imagine and describe how your attitude would change if you take action to improve your GPA.
