Calculator Art Assignment for Honors Algebra II
In this assignment, connect art with Algebra by graphing using equations of functions/relations. Draw a picture that uses different types of equations. The theme of the art work is “Inside a Building” and it cannot be abstract. It needs the following items:
1) Technical Page (20 pts)
With the assistance of your calculator and/or Winplot (a free program for graphing on the computer), create a NEATLY DRAWN technical page on a numbered coordinate plane consisting of various functions/relations with at least the following:
3 diagonal lines, 2 absolute values, 1 horizontal line, *1 vertical line,
*1 horizontal parábola 1 vertical parábola *1 circle 1 inverse (1/x or 1/x2)
1 square root function 1 step function 1 intersection shading (A(x)< 5x & B(x)>|x +2|).
1 shifting graph in which you give the graph of f(x) as it goes through the origin and then ask for a shift similar to f(x +3) – 2.
Label each function as A(x), B(x), and each non-function (* from list above) as #1, #2 etc.
Be sure to also label the coordinate plane.
2) Equation Page (45 pts)
Type (using Microsoft Editor) the following in a neat and organized manner on a separate sheet of paper:
*Give the equations accurately using Microsoft Equation Editor (35 pts).
*Give the domain and range of each function/relation next to the equation (10 pts).
3) Work Page (25 pts)
*Write the equation of all linear functions in standard form with work shown (10 pts).
*Choose two points on one of the diagonal lines. Show all work on how to find the equation of the line. (5 pts)
* Write the equation of the parabolas in standard form and vertex form with work shown (10 pts)
(Show the work on how to go from Ax2 + Bx + C to vertex form)
If your parabolas are on an axis then you must show work on how to move a parabola not on an axis
3) Artistic Page (10 pts)
Display the picture (without gridlines) on a paper larger than 8 ½ X 11 (or larger) in color. You may add more details if needed.
The remaining 20 points will be determined by the difficulty, creativity and neatness of all four pages.
It’s due on March 19th/20th, 2012. A 10 point deduction will be taken for every day that it is turned in late. It will count as a test grade.
*You may work with a partner but you must do twice the minimum amount (e.g. 6 diagonal lines etc.)
*You are not required to give the domain/range/standard form of graphs that are more than the minimum requirements. (e.g. You only have to give the domain/range of two absolute value graphs if by yourself.) However, every equation must be written on the equation page.
Hints for Graphing with TI-83:
*Choose ‘simul’ mode.
* Select the …(dotted line) to the left of y= instead of ___.
*Restrict the domains of your graph in a similar manner: y=(abs (x + 2))(x-1) .
