CollierAP Psychology/ Calhoun Dual Enrollment Syllabus2018-2019 School YearCourse Description: This Advanced Placement Psychology Course is designed to give students a college-level experience which will serve a comparable course to Introductory Psychology at University. ?The course will involve nightly reading assignments, vocabulary and unit exams. Students should be willing to put in roughly 30 minutes per night to complete reading assignments which will be necessary to participate in daily class discussions. ?Unit exams will involve both multiple-choice and free-response components in preparation for the Advanced Placement exam in May. The main goal of the course is to demonstrate to students that an understanding of Psychology can help facilitate a better understanding of one`s self and others. ?We will also make a daily effort to demonstrate how psychological concepts impact one`s day-to-day life.The course will cover the following topics: social psychology, history/careers and theories, research methods, biological bases of behavior, sensation/perception, consciousness, learning, memory, cognition, development, personality, motivation and emotion, disorders and treatment.Course Objectives:At the completion of this course students should be able to:1. Understand scientific methodology.2. Increase knowledge of physiological psychology and student understanding of the relationship between biology and behavior.3. Increase student’s knowledge and understanding of the various states of consciousness.4. Gain an understanding of the complexity of developmental psychology through the study of physical, intellectual, emotional, moral, and social growth over the life span.5. Understand and apply the major core concepts and theories of psychology to practical situations.6. Increase knowledge about the variety of approaches to the treatment and classification system for the psychological disorders.7. Understand measurement of intelligence and good test design and analysis.8. Be able to carry out the basic skills of psychological research. 9. Apply psychological concepts to one`s own life. ?10. Develop critical thinking skills.For Review: ?i-Score 5 Psychology app: Grades will include projects, homework, exams, quizzes, and participation.Exams: Each unit will conclude with a chapter exam. ?Typically, these will occur every two to three weeks. ?The format of these tests will follow that of the Advanced Placement Exam. ?Each exam will consist of multiple-choice section and free-response portions. ?First semester tests will consist of 40 multiple-choice questions and 1 free- response question. ?Second semester exams will consist of 50 multiple-choice (10 of which will be cumulative review questions) and 1 AP style free response. ?Lecture/discussion, articles and textbook readings will all appear on the tests. Students are responsible for any material that has been assigned regardless of whether it was specifically discussed in class.Any student will have the opportunity to review topics with which they struggled on exams and to retake an alternate version of the exam for an average of the two grades. There will be a way you can earn extra points on your unit test. If you take the practice test the day before the exam and every question you get correct will add ? a point on your test. You WILL NOT be allowed to retest if you do not take the practice test. For all unexcused absences the max grade on assignments including test will be 70%AP Exam: ?The AP exam will take place in May (TBA). ?The 2-hour exam consists of 100 multiple-choice questions which students have 70 minutes to complete and 2 free-response questions, which students have 50 minutes to complete. ?Students will begin to register for the AP exam in March and may earn up to 4 hours of University credit with a grade of 3, 4 or 5 on the Advanced Placement exam (excludes dual enrollment students).Quizzes: ?Quizzes may be given at any time; the most essential element to success in Advanced Placement Psychology/ Dual Enrollment is completion of assigned reading. Quizzes will often cover material that may be particularly challenging for students and are intended to give special emphasis to these areas prior to a high stakes exam.Cheating: ?DONT! The key to an individual’s success is to take responsibility for one’s own actions. ?This means accepting the consequences for not completing reading or other homework assignments. ?Anyone caught cheating at any time, on any assignment will receive a score of 0 for that assignment regardless of its point value with no option to make up the points and will face disciplinary consequences for this action.As it is understandable that occasionally unexpected events will prevent a student from completing a required assignment, students will receive one free homework pass per marking period on a homework assignment. ?If students complete all homework assignments in a marking period, they can drop their lowest grade. If a student is caught cheating on any assignment, they will lose the homework pass for the duration of the year.Homework: ?There will be a fair amount of outside reading. ?Reading assignments from the text will be assigned at the start of each chapter and students will receive a schedule for the entire unit in order to anticipate the dates of upcoming assignments and exams. ?Reading quizzes may occur at any point during a unit. Specific articles, worksheets and other assignments will also be included on the weekly schedule.Electronic resources: ?Extra practice and resources as well as video clips and review materials, course calendar and other materials will be available at: Assignments: ?NO LATE ASSIGNMENTS WILL BE ACCEPTED!!! ??As this is a college level course, students are responsible for completing homework assignments on time.Attendance: If a student is absent the day before a test or a quiz, they will be expected to take the exam with the class. ?Any vacations or extended absences should be arranged in advance whenever possible. Remember that attendance is an essential part of the learning experience and each day missed is a lost chance for learning. ?It is the student`s responsibility to check for any make up work if they have missed a day of class.Courtesy/Participation: ?Every student in class contributes to the success of the entire class. ?This means attention during class, participation, and attention when either the instructor or other students are speaking or presenting and giving every student in class the opportunity to freely express their opinions and ideas without the use of cells phones, computers or other electronic devices (except when necessary for the sake of a given lesson).Success for each student is obtainable, through hard work. ?Cooperation between student and teacher is a large step towards this success. ?If you have and questions, comments, or concerns feel free to see me at any-time and we can arrange a time outside of class to meet.Extra Credit: There is a possibly for extra credit. You must attempt all practice test, and you must have completed all assignments given. You can’t be allowed extra credit if you have been caught cheating on any assignments, test, or quizzes.
