California Jury Instructions
CACI (pronounced "Kay See"/”Casey”) – (“California Civil Instructions”) are the official civil jury instructions, as approved by the Judicial
Council of California, that took effect on September 1, 2003. The Judicial Council has not mandated use of CACI to the exclusion of other jury
instructions. Rule 2.1050 of the California Rules of Court, states that use of the new instructions is “strongly encouraged” and they are
recommended for use unless a judge “finds that a different instruction would more accurately state the law and be understood by jurors.” Rule
2.1050(e). LexisNexis Matthew Bender is the official publisher. The official instructions are meant to provide comprehensive, legally accurate
jury instructions that are readily understood by the average juror.
BAJI (“Book of Approved Jury Instructions”) had quasi-official status for many years and is still used. Formerly prepared by the Los Angeles
Superior Court's BAJI Committee, the Thomson company, owner of the BAJI copyright, continues to publish and update BAJI.

Families
Why should you know about legal publishing families?
Books published within the same family generally reference other books published by that family. Expand your search by using books published by all three major publishers and don’t overlook books published by independent publishers.
The legal publishing industry is under the control of three major corporations:
(1) Reed Elsevier Professional Publishing, (2) Thomson Financial & Professional Publishing Group, and (3) Wolters Kluwer. As of 2006, these three companies – all of them foreign owned – accounted for 82% of U.S. sales of legal information. Legal Information Buyer’s Guide & Reference Manual (2007) by Kendall Svengalis, Rhode Island Lawpress, at p.15.

Bureau of National Affairs “BNA”
Headquartered in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area for more than 75 years, BNA is an independent publisher and the oldest wholly employee-owned company in the United States.
California Continuing Education of the Bar “CEB”
CEB, founded by the University of California and the State Bar of California in 1947, offers a catalog full of high-quality California-specific treatises and Action Guides
Authors of CEB books are distinguished, practicing attorneys – or judges – who are experts in their fields. California Supreme Court associate justice Kathryn Werdegar was a former director of CEB’s criminal law division. CEB materials include many practice tips and checklists.
In addition to practice treatises, CEB publishes Action Guides that break down complex legal tasks into steps. Each guide focuses on a set of procedures, outlining a plan of action to complete time-sensitive matters on schedule. Includes comparisons of available options, details to consider, deadlines to meet, copies of forms to use and case and treatise references for further research.
CEB’s OnLaw provides many CEB books in electronic format with free links to California statutes and cases.
Daily Journal Corporation
The Daily Journal has published a daily newspaper since 1893. Publisher of the San Francisco Daily Journal and Los Angeles Daily Journal.
Data Trace Publishing Company
Data Trace was originally founded in 1985 and has been a legal publisher since 1991.
“Data Trace Publishing Company has developed a corporate culture believed to be vastly different from other publishing companies. Responsive, service oriented, hands-on and non-bureaucratic, this culture has allowed new products and new ideas to flourish and is one of the key factors in Data Trace's ability to compete successfully with other larger companies in the publishing and information industry.”
James Publishing, Inc. (family-owned)
“Expanding conglomerate ownership in the legal publishing industry has triggered an increase in profits-first business practices. Since the inception of James Publishing in 1981, we've always taken a different approach.
James is a family-owned company that takes pride in reinvesting profits in product improvements, never auto-shipping line extensions, limiting the frequency of updates, delivering original material in every title, and doing our best to hold the line on supplement prices.”
Local Government Publications
Since 1976 James Longtin has self-published practice books on land use law, including planning, zoning, subdivision, building and environmental regulation.
Little-Known Tax Fact
Longtin invented the IRA/401k tax shelter concept.
Nolo Press
“Since 1971, Nolo's goal has been simple: To make America's legal system accessible to everyone.”
Solano Press Books
