Grade 7 & 8 Math SyllabusMrs. Frizzijfrizzi@ Description and Learning ObjectivesWelcome to 7th and 8th grade! I am so happy to teach all of our wonderful Hawkins students this year. We will be using California Go Math Middle School Grade 7 and Grade 8 textbooks this year. (2015). The textbook is a consumable. Students will work in their textbook during class and for homework. Students will learn the Common Core State Standards in Mathematics, focusing on the essential standards for their grade level. They will also be utilizing the standards for math practice. You can find these standards and practices at the beginning of your student’s text on pages CA2- CA9. We will usually go in the order of the text, but may change the order as necessary to maximize student learning.GradesStudents and parents can monitor grades online with the Aeries grade system. Usernames and passwords are available in the office and will be given to every student. Students are encouraged to regularly check their grades on Aeries and keep all returned and graded work until after the trimester ends. Parents are encouraged to stay informed on their student’s ongoing grades by looking at the Aeries grading portal and frequently looking at the homework on the teacher’s website. Homework is posted in the classroom and on my classroom webpage as part of the Jefferson School District website and will be updated as changes occur. This is the web address: will have homework every day, Monday through Thursday, in Math. Students must show their work on all assignments and tests. Part of the grade will be based on showing evidence of the math practices by showing work. Homework is necessary to master the skills taught in class and it is a valuable opportunity for parents to see some of the skills we are working on in class. If the student does not use their class time effectively and keep up, they must also finish classwork together with their homework. All assignments must be completed on time. All classwork is allowed to be completed at home and turned in the next day. Calculations or the set up for the solution must be shown or they will not receive full points. If a student has difficulty completing an assignment on time, he/she should see me for an extension. If a student falls behind, late work will be accepted up until the day of the module test. Late homework will receive maximum C score if late. Classwork will be given full credit if caught up by the day of the module test. No extensions will be given past the end of each module. In the case of a failed formative quiz, the student can take a new one to try for a higher score. No retakes will be given for failed summative module tests/quizzes.Grades for Math are weighted as follows:Summative Module Assessments50%Formative Quizzes10%Formative Nightly Homework15%Formative Classwork 20%Formative Notebook5%Academic Dishonesty:Student work must be their own. No credit will be given in cases where copying occurs. Studying with a friend is fine, even encouraged, but both students need to have their own work. In cases where a student violates test taking protocol, a zero will be given on the test or quiz with no opportunity for retake. Test taking protocol includes no talking to another student for any reason, no looking at one another’s papers for any reason, and no passing notes for any reason. All tests are closed book unless specifically stated. DisciplineStudents are aware of our Hawkins rules for classroom behavior. We have them posted on the wall. These are Behavior, Attitude, Responsibility, and Kindness. Since we only have a fixed amount of time in each class period, it is essential for each student to come prepared, ready to learn, and respectful of others’ right to learn. Students are expected to raise their hands, work effectively and on-task in group work, and to not have side conversations while the teacher is speaking.Students involved in minor disruptions will simply be reminded of these rules and redirected to focus on the assignment. Repeated redirections constitute my “warning.” After several of these redirections, I may change the student's seating location or send them into hall for a break to refocus their behavior. I do not call home for these. However, if the behavior continues, the student might be sent to another classroom to work for part of the class, or receive a detention during lunch recess, or a referral to the office. I will call or email a parent/guardian in these situations. More serious behaviors will be referred to the office immediately. Again, here are the steps followed, except in serious situations.Friendly reminder to the student or to the group of students.Verbal Warning and reminder to follow the simple class rules listed above.A change in seat location or a brief break in the hallway to regroup themselves and re-enter ready to learn.20 minutes in a different classroom.Lunch detention with parent contact.Referral to the Vice Principal or Principal with parent contact.Absences, Independent Studies, and SuspensionsIf your child is ill, they should rest and get well. However, if they feel well enough to do some work, they have their math textbook with them at all times. They can check my website calendar page for the HW assignment for that day. They can also call a friend in their grade level to ask which classwork pages we did that day. Otherwise, when they return to school, they must ask which classwork assignments they missed. In case of illness, students have the same number of days as the absence to catch up on new assignments after their return. For prolonged absence, if you’d like to email for the class pages, I will do my best to respond at the end of the teaching day or by the next day with the page range covered. An Independent Study has different requirements. No extra time is given to catch up on work that was scheduled to be done on the independent study. It all must be submitted on the first morning of the student's return to school and the student must be ready to make up any quizzes and tests that first day back.If a student is suspended, no make-up work or late work will be accepted.Sincerely,Mrs. Frizzijfrizzi@839-2380 x1126- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Parents and students, please sign that you have read and understand the syllabus.Student’s Full Name (print) _____________________________________ Student’s Class Period ________Student’s Signature _________________________________________ Date _________________Parent’s Name (print) ________________________________________Parent’s Signature __________________________________________ Date _________________ ................
