The assessments are formative in nature and measure student strengths and weaknesses on standards covered in their respective instructional units. Teachers should use the information gathered to refine instructional practice in order to improve student achievement. They are assessments of learning, but they also serve as assessments for learning. Local District South has approved several options for schools regarding interim assessments. Schools may give the Smarter Balanced Interim Assessments (Interim Assessment Blocks and/or Interim Comprehensive Assessments), the District’s CCSS-based interim assessments in ELA and Math, or CCSS-based interim assessments that have been determined by the school and approved by the Local District Superintendent. Each school, working with its director, will identify the specific interim assessments to be used. Local District South highly encourages using the Smarter Balanced Interim Assessments; they align with the SBAC summative assessments and offer students repeated opportunities to test using the same platform they will experience on the summative assessment. The district states that schools must administer interim assessments at least twice prior to the Smarter Balanced summative assessment. Attached is LD South’s assessment plan which provides a recommended sequence of administration and suggested window dates for the Smarter Balanced Interim Assessments.
