Robert Marzano's explanation of The Power Law of Learning. Learning has a start point and an end point. In between, the learning is impacted by all sorts of factors inside and outside of the classroom. Learning does not occur at a steady pace, but has periods of rapid gains and plateaus. Standards-based grading measures the levels of learning that takes place over time. For a given standard, the number of scores and the position of the score in that range of time is important. The Power Law of Learning determines the trend of student's learning. It helps to answer the question, "If the student were assessed right now on a skill, what level would the student likely perform at?" The student's grade for the standard is meant to be an indication of the skill at a certain point in time with the most recent reported score carrying the most weight.

Mr. Jon Henry Lee Principal James Campbell High School
