The increasing prevalence of the condition is blamed on lifestyle and dietary factors, such as physical inactivity, alcohol and tobacco use, and a diet high in sodium(1). Hypertension can be primary and secondary. Primary hypertension results from a complex interaction of genes and environmental factors. Secondary hypertension results from identifiable cause. Kidney disease is the most common secondary cause of hypertension(2). Long term prevalence of hypertension can lead to major risk factors, so it requires appropriate treatment for better life. The present study evaluates the drug utilisation pattern of Anti hypertensive drugs in ACS patients among South Indian population.keywords: Hypertension, Antihypertensive drugs, Prescription pattern.00Abstract Hypertension or High blood pressure is a condition in which the force of the blood against the artery walls is too high. Blood pressure is usually expressed in terms of the systolic pressure over diastolic pressure and is measured in millimetres of mercury (mmHg ).Hypertension or High blood pressure is a condition in which the force of the blood against the artery walls is too high. Hypertension is defined as blood pressure? higher than 140 over 90 mmHg (millimetres of mercury)( 1). Hypertension? can? be? primary? and secondary.? Primary? hypertension results? from? a? complex? interaction? of genes? and? environmental? factors. Secondary? hypertension? results? from identifiable? cause. Kidney? disease? is the? most? common? secondary? cause of? hypertension(2). Long term prevalence of this can lead to major risk factors. Common reversible causes are excessive intake of alcohol and use of oral contraceptives, which can cause a slight rise in blood pressure; hormone therapy for menopause? is also a culprit (3) Secondary hypertension can also result from Kidney disease, Diabetes, Cushing syndrome, Hyperthyroidism, Hyperparathyroidism, Phenochromocytome, Sleep apnea, Obesity, Pregnancy(3)High blood pressure inc morbidity in heart failureby causing left ventricular hypertrophy, a thickening of the heart muscle that results in less effective muscle relaxation between heart beats. This makes it difficult for the heart to fill with enough blood to supply the body’s organs, especially during exercise, leading your body to hold onto fluids and your heart rate to increase(4).In patients with acute coronary syndromes (ACS), hypertension is common. The type of ACS and severity of hypertension would determine the treatment algorithm20408904520565Figure : 10Figure : 1-66548048577500 Causes of hypertension:PATHOPHYSIOLOGY:Hypertension refers to decreased blood flow because of vasoconstriction due to narrowed lumen. Pathophysiology is explained in Figure :219519906871335Figure :2 00Figure :2 -81280055435500MATERIALS AND METHOD:This prospective observational study was conducted for a period of one month(December2016) based on in and out patient medical records of patients admitted in Saveetha medical college and hospital in Chennai. 50 patients were selected based on inclusion and exclusion criteria.Patients having chief complaint of ACS and diagnosed with hypertension was the inclusion criteria.Non hypertensive ACS patients, hypertensive patients with no signs of ACS was the exclusion criteria.METHODOLOGY:The Prescription Forms are analysed for various parameters like gender of the patient, type of anti-hypertensive drugs used, type of therapy (monotheraphy or two drug combination therapy) and other diseases associated with hypertension. In this study, 50 ACS patients with hypertension were included. Most commonly prescribed drugs are Amlodipine, Atenolol, Enalapril, Diltiazem. In this study, Amlodipine was used more than Diltiazem this study, two drug combination was more common than mono therapy. Also even the previous study have the same result as combination therapy more common than mono therapy.CONCLUSION:Hypertension or High blood pressure is a long term medical condition which does not have any symptoms but can lead to major risk factors. The major cause of Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS) is due to narrowing of blood vessels supplying the heart. High blood pressure in ACS patient can lead to severe risk. Thus maintaining a normal blood pressure or lowering the high blood pressure in ACS patients is very important.REFERENCES:1) Hypertension : Causes, Symptoms and TreatmentWritten by Markus MacGill2) Survey of prescription pattern of anti-hypertensive drugs in hypertensives & hypertension associated diabeticsTasneem Sandozi,?Vamsi Krishna Emani3) Management of hypertension in relation to acute coronary syndromes and revascularisation .Kühl M1, Lip GY, Varma C4) Prescription Pattern Of Anti-Hypertensive Drugs In A Tertiary Health Institution In NigeriaE Etuk, SA Isezuo, A Chika, J Akuche, M Ali ................
