Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP)

2020

Information Package for International Students

The Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) offers undergraduate and medical students a unique opportunity to experience the excitement and challenge of scientific research, working in the laboratories of some of the world’s top medical scientists. SURP students gain presentation skills and strengthen their research experience for future graduate studies.

Program Description:

Participants in the program spend 12 weeks (June - August) in the laboratories/clinics of IMS faculty members, working on research projects across a broad spectrum of the biomedical sciences, ranging from molecular biology and cognitive sciences to clinical investigation and bioethics. Trainees are encouraged to participate in laboratory meetings, data analysis sessions, journal clubs and/or appropriate clinical research rounds at the various affiliated teaching hospitals.

IMS offers a formal lecture series to complement students’ research, consisting of diverse research presentations, graduate information sessions, Undergraduate Research Career Day, and practical skills workshops. In mid-August, students and supervisors participate in an IMS Research Day, where Faculty members serve as judges as students deliver their work through a poster or podium presentation. Exceptional student presentations are awarded prizes and/or certificate. Upon achieving the IMS Summer Research Program requirements, participants receive a certificate of completion.

Requirements for Program Completion:

▪ Conduct wet lab/clinical research under faculty supervision

▪ Attend weekly lecture series

▪ Submit an abstract for the IMS Research Day

▪ Render a presentation (poster or podium) at the IMS Research Day

Duration:

Students participate in a 12-week program starting June 1, 2020 and ending August 21, 2020. Breaks or short leaves of absence will be granted at the sole discretion of the student’s supervisor, but not interfering with fulfilling program requirements.
