The Position The Peer Connector will be responsible for welcoming and friendly service in the Well-Being Café on the main floor. The role will involve greeting and assisting guests and community members, providing resource information, and informal peer support with a focus on creating and maintaining an environment that is positive, comfortable and inclusive. Additional tasks of an administrative nature include answering the main phone line and greeting callers, assisting guests to sign in and sign out their attendance, make coffee for the café and navigate emails and inquiries. The ResponsibilitiesGreet guests to CMHA in a friendly and welcoming approachCommunicate events and activities scheduled to guestsProvide resource information, including external services and internal programs and services provided at CMHAConnect with guests providing understanding and peer support as neededProvide assistance and support to a guest computer areaProvide assistance and support to the Community Resource Area including providing supplies, ensuring participants have signed in for the computer use and problem solving issues as they ariseEnsure the welcome centre is clean, comfortable and safe; responsible for office maintenance duties such as opening and closing procedures and monitoring and refilling supplies (i.e. bathroom supplies, tissue, refreshments, computer paper)Operate telephone system to answer and forward telephone calls, taking messages, checking voice mail, and providing basic information regarding CMHA programsOversee office email, forwards and responds to emails appropriatelyReceive general mail and distributes it to proper personsPhotocopy and collate documents for distribution, sends messages using facsimile (fax) function and processes outgoing mail using electronic mailing machineThe QualificationsCompletion of grade 12 or equivalencyPrevious peer support experience Strong verbal communication skillsStrong professional boundaries Knowledge and understanding of mental health and mental illness and recovery-oriented approachesTraining in trauma-informed and culturally safe approaches, strengths perspective, and general customer service The AccountabilitiesFamiliar with peer support competencies and valuesStrong customer service and organizational skills with accurate attention to detailEffective team member, working to achieve a common goal of enhancing the service user’s experience and journey of recoveryAbility to work with interruptionsEffective problem-solving skillsTime management skillsExercise sound judgement, adjust priorities, and consult as neededCommitment to ongoing learning and developmentUnderstands and applies person-centred and recovery-oriented approachesUnderstands and consistently abides to confidentiality and privacy expectationsUnderstands and ensures behaviour is consistent with the CMHA’s core values and policies and adheres to the values, principles and policies of the organizationCommitment to ongoing learning and developmentDevelop and maintain collaborative relationships with co-workers and external persons including guests and program participants Up to date knowledge of agency programs, staffing and areas of responsibilityEffective and efficient use of office equipment (multi-line telephones, computers, copier, mail machine)OtherMust have a recent satisfactory criminal record/vulnerable persons check and a recent satisfactory abuse registry checkFlexible working hours including eveningsAt CMHA, employment equity is a factor in hiring.
