O ENÓLOGO JOSÉ NEIVA CORREIA

Nasceu e cresceu em terra de vinhos e vinhedos naquela que muitos historiadores consideram ser uma das propriedades mais antigas do concelho de Alenquer e cuja origem é anterior à nacionalidade – a Quinta de Porto Franco. É a este terroir de excelência que José Neiva Correia, 64 anos, um dos enólogos que mais vinhos assinou em Portugal, vai buscar grande parte da matéria-prima para produzir as melhores colheitas da DFJ Vinhos, a empresa que fundou há uma década e que hoje é responsável por uma produção média anual de seis milhões de garrafas, 33 marcas e 77 vinhos diferentes, oriundos das regiões vinícolas do Douro, Tejo, Lisboa, Setúbal e Alentejo.

Descendente de várias gerações de vitivinicultores, tanto do lado do pai, como da mãe, José Neiva Correia seguiu a tradição familiar com gosto e profissionalismo. Quem bem o conhece ou com ele trabalha gaba-lhe a criatividade e o entusiasmo com que assina cada um dos seus muitos e variados vinhos, em que mistura castas improváveis com resultados surpreendentes. Sejam topos de gama a preços superiores e com tiragens reduzidas ou maiores volumes destinados a satisfazer os grandes mercados internacionais, a exigência pela qualidade do produto final é, convictamente, a mesma, sem qualquer pretensão. Há que saber fazer, muito bem e de tudo.

Como enólogo, tem vindo a desenvolver um trabalho pioneiro na implantação de novas castas em Portugal, a promover uma agricultura mais amiga do ambiente, livre de químicos e, inclusivamente, a procurar encontrar soluções para um dos grandes problemas com que se debate o sector vinícola: a correcta vedação das garrafas com rolhas de cortiça.

Rigoroso e dado à investigação, chegou a desenvolver e patentear um método de desinfecção das rolhas através do ozono (que acabou por vender ao Grupo Amorim) e que contribui para a diminuição do teor do famigerado TCA (o composto Tricloroanisol causador do chamado “cheiro a mofo”), o maior inimigo dos enólogos.

Sendo o sexto de oito filhos, José Neiva Correia ainda hoje possui, juntamente com os irmãos, a Rui Abreu Correia, Herdeiros, uma das maiores casas agrícolas da Estremadura que, entre várias outras culturas, é também detentora de 200 hectares de vinha distribuídos pelos concelhos de Alenquer e de Torres Vedras.

Born and raised on a wine and vineyard estate that many historians deem one of the longest established in the council of Alenquer and whose origins stretch back prior to the founding of the nation of Portugal – the Quinta de Porto Franco. It is from the excellence of this estate that José Neiva Correia, now 64 years of age and one of the most productive winemakers in the country, sources much of the raw material put into producing the very best DFJ Vinhos wines. This was the company he launched over a decade ago and that has now reached an average annual production level of six million bottles, across 33 brands and 77 different wines deriving from all mainland Portuguese regions, from Douro, Tejo, Lisboa, Setúbal and Alentejo wine region.

Descending from generations dedicated to the art of viniculture, both on his father’s and his mother’s sides, José Neiva Correia followed in his family’s traditions not only out of preference but also with thorough professionalism. Those who know and work with him make regular mention of his creativity and the enthusiasm that goes into each of his many and sharply differing wines with their blend of improbable grape varieties and surprising results. Whether top of the range, high priced and produced in restricted quantities or in mass volumes designed to meet the needs of the major international markets, the demand for quality in the final product never wavers whatever the circumstances. His knowledge is extensive and underpins everything he does.

As a winemaker, he has played a pioneering role both in the introduction of new varieties in Portugal and in promoting healthy, chemical free agricultural practices. Furthermore, he has contributed towards solutions found for the major problems facing the wine sector such as the appropriate sealing of wine bottle corks. Rigorous and keen on investigation, he has developed and patented a method for disinfecting the corks using ozone that has since been sold onto Grupo Amorim. This has helped in reducing the level of undesirable TCA (the Trichloroanisol compound causing the “musty smell”), a great threat to wine making.

As the sixth of eight children, José Neiva Correia still remains owner, in partnership with his brothers and sisters, of Rui Abreu Correia, Herdeiros, one of the largest agricultural holdings in Estremadura that tends, among other crops, 200 hectares of vineyards located across the councils of Alenquer and Torres Vedras.
