ASK: Who are the leaders in your life? Lead preteens in brainstorming this question, and write their responses on the board. Have each student choose a leader and think of a time that this person’s life has impacted them. Tell preteens to come up with catchy headlines for their examples. For example: “Courageous teacher leads wild students to playground,” or “Sheriff takes texting teen off the road.” SAY: Let’s dig into God’s Word to see what it says about church leaders.

Leaders acquire their positions for specific reasons. In the 2016 movie Trolls, the troll Peppy shows great courage by leading an effort to rescue her fellow trolls. Peppy has a positive attitude that lifts the spirits of those around her. In the 2017 movie Smurfs: The Lost Village, wise Grandpa Smurf makes efforts to steer younger trolls away from danger and settle disagreements that occur; he bravely comes to the rescue when adventures get scary. A similar example of leadership is coming to movie screens soon. Rumor has it that, in Despicable Me 3, which will be released June 30, Gru leads his followers by showing them how to overcome temptation. Gru, who changed from being a villain to being good in Despicable Me, must choose whether or not he will resist the evil lifestyle he once loved. In both of these series, as in real life, people become leaders when they model for others the right way to go.
