CONJUNCTIVITIS INFORMATION

School: ____________________________ Date: ___________________

Dear Parent/Guardian:

Your child appears to have symptoms of conjunctivitis, commonly known as “pink eye”. There are four major causes of conjunctivitis: infection, allergy, injury, and systemic diseases such as measles. Infectious conjunctivitis is very contagious and spreads rapidly to adults and children. In order to control the spread of this condition, please check your child’s eyes each morning before sending him/her to school.

SYMPTOMS OF INFECTIOUS CONJUNCTIVITIS MAY INCLUDE:

▪ The white of the eye/s may appear pink.

▪ Eye/s may itch, water, and sometimes swell.

▪ A whitish, yellowish, or greenish discharge from the eye/s may occur.

▪ Eyelids may stick together, especially in the morning.

▪ Eye/s may feel sandy or scratchy.

TREATMENT:

Infectious conjunctivitis must be treated by a doctor. Corneal scarring and some loss of vision can occur without prompt medical treatment.

HOW SPREAD:

Infectious conjunctivitis is easily spread by contact with anything soiled with discharge from the eye such as hands or towels.

SCHOOL DISTRICT POLICY:

Students with infectious conjunctivitis are excluded from school until symptoms subside or a note is received from the student’s doctor.

If you have any questions or concerns about conjunctivitis, please contact the School Nurse.
