Get Fit New Jersey! -A Downloadable Publication
Get Fit New Jersey! is a publication of the NJ Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, which was formed to encourage and promote physical fitness statewide. The project was proposed to meet the Governor’s Office fitness challenge and address the needs of the people of New Jersey however it may be helpful to other states as well. A Council member or a resource member authored each of the 21 chapters, and the result is an easy-to-read guide to better health and fitness for people of all ages.
U.S. Department of Transportation Strategic Plan
The U.S. Department of Transportation has released its strategic plan for fiscal years 2006-2011. The plan is designed to build on the progress made by the DOT in improving transportation in the United States and examines how the department will work to lay the foundation for a new transportation model that will be

The toolkit provides resources that are applicable regardless if they exercise at home or in a gym or at a senior center.
New SmallStep Kids Web Site Shows Children the Power of Healthy Eating!
The HHS Smallsteps program has added a website geared to children. It contains exciting games to help children understand that wise food choices and good eating habits can help improve all of their favorite activities. The site includes online games developed in partnership with Warner Brothers starring the Tazmanian DevilTM and other Looney ToonsTM characters and a host of other features including mechanisms that bounce children off the site and prompt them to get up and get moving if they sit around for too long.

Physical Activity and Children and Adolescents Knowledge Path
The Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Library has added a knowledge path about physical activity and children and adolescents. This electronic resource guide offers a selection of current resources that analyze data, describe public health campaigns and other promotion programs, and report on research aimed at identifying promising strategies for improving physical activity levels within families, schools, and communities. The knowledge path also provides resources that describe the consequences of sedentary behavior. The MCH Library is located at the National Center for Education in Maternal and Child Health (NCEMCH) at Georgetown University.

Methodology To Evaluate The Outcomes Of The Team Nutrition Initiative In Schools
This project develops a data collection methodology to evaluate outcomes of Team Nutrition, a voluntary USDA school-based initiative to promote nutrition education, healthy eating, and physical activity. The project uses information technology to collect high-quality data while decreasing respondent and investigator burden and lowering costs of collecting and analyzing evaluation data. Seven data collection instruments were developed: five collect information from school personnel, one collects information from students, and the seventh is an on-site observation of the school environment. The instruments are being pilot-tested in one State, but because Team Nutrition is a national initiative, the methodology could be useful to other States.

This report considers the existing practice of state agencies that affect transportation, land development, school planning, and best practices throughout Florida and the country to develop guidance for legislative and policy development in Florida.
A Foundation for the Future: Analysis of Local Wellness Policies from the 100 Largest School Districts
This analyses provided by the School Nutrition Association outlines key characteristics of local wellness policies approved by the largest 100 school districts by enrollment in the United States. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, the top 100 school districts make up less than 1% of the school districts in the nation but account for 16% of the schools, 21% of the teachers and 23% of the nation's K-12 students.
American Academy of Pediatrics Report: The Importance of Play in Promoting Healthy Child Development and Maintaining Strong Parent-Child Bonds
The American Academy of Pediatrics has published this report in defense of play and in response to forces threatening free play and unscheduled time. These forces include changes in family structure, the increasingly competitive college admissions process, and federal education policies that have led to reduced recess and physical education in many schools. The report suggests that reduced time for physical activity may be contributing to the academic differences between boys and girls, as schools with sedentary learning styles become more difficult settings for some boys to navigate successfully.

Giving Kids the Voice of Authority: Engaging Students in the Fight Against Childhood Obesity is the second in a series of Field Reports published by Action for Healthy Kids and designed to mobilize change at the grassroots level by involving parents, students, and school leaders. The reports are part of Action for Healthy Kids’ recently launched “Campaign for School Wellness,” a multifaceted communications and outreach effort that brings to schools new tools and resources for strengthening their wellness efforts.

Iowa Bike Maps Available At No Charge
The 2005 Iowa Transportation Map for Bicyclists shows hundreds of miles of multi-use trails and also includes traffic levels for all paved roadways so bicyclists can choose the road routes that match their level of riding experience.
