Task 3 ¨C Famous buildings

Read the texts about some well-known towers. Complete the sentences with the correct answer (A, B or C).

The Clock Tower of the Houses of Parliament in London is usually called ¡®Big

Ben¡¯ by locals and tourists. Since 2012, it has had a new name ¨C the Elizabeth

Tower, to celebrate Queen Elizabeth¡¯s Diamond Jubilee. Big Ben is really the

name of the largest of the five bells inside the tower. The Elizabeth Tower is 96

metres high and has 11 floors.

The Veszpr¨¦m Fire Tower stands at the foot of Castle Hill. It is one of the symbols

of the Hungarian city. It is 48 metres high. Originally it was a watchtower, as it

was suitable for observing the town for signs of fire. The tower was rebuilt after

the earthquake in 1810. The clock of the tower plays music every hour and also

strikes quarter-hourly.

The world-famous Leaning Tower of Pisa has a long history ¨C it took two

centuries to build it. It is the bell tower of the Cathedral of Pisa. Unfortunately,

the tower began to lean due to the soft sandy ground. The tower is currently

stable. In 2008, engineers found that it is no longer moving. It is the symbol of

the city.

The Eiffel Tower is a symbol of Paris and one of the best-known buildings in

the world. Alexandre Gustave Eiffel built it as the entrance for the International

Exhibition of Paris in 1889. At a height of 324 metres, it was the tallest tower in

the world until 1930. From its observation decks you can enjoy beautiful views

of the French capital city.
