EIGHT REGIONAL PGA JUNIOR LEAGUE GOLF CAPTAINS AND PGA SECTIONS OF THE YEAR TO BE HONORED AT 62ND PGA MERCHANDISE SHOW

National Captain and Section of the Year to be named Jan. 21 during PGA Junior League Golf presentation

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. – The PGA of America and League Golf will honor eight regional PGA Junior League Golf Captains and PGA Sections of the Year for their successful 2014 seasons during the 62nd PGA Merchandise Show. The national PGA Junior League Golf Captain and PGA Section of the Year will be named Jan. 21 (Wednesday) during the “Growing Junior Golf Through PGA Junior League Golf” presentation (2:30 – 3:15 p.m.) on the PGA Forum Stage.

“Our Professionals and PGA Section honorees have truly put in the time, energy and passion to cultivate PGA Junior League Golf participants across the country,” said PGA of America President Derek Sprague. “Thanks to their efforts, boys and girls nationwide are being introduced to golf and ensuring the future of the game.”

The regional Captains of the Year were selected based upon various criteria, including player participation, recruitment of PGA Professional Captains, parental involvement and other administrative duties associated with running their leagues.

The 2014 PGA Junior League Golf regional Captains of the Year with their achievements are:

Region 1 – Todd Cook, PGA: Milton Hoosic Club (Canton, Mass.)

• Cook was a leader within New England, where the number of teams doubled in 2014. He captained two teams and recruited neighboring clubs to form two local leagues he led and managed.

Region 2 – Andy Miller, PGA: Berkshire Country Club (Reading, Pa.)

• Miller was the voice of the Western Pennsylvania league and hosted the Philadelphia PGA Section “Final Four” Championship in 2014. He increased his PGA Junior League Golf program numbers from four kids to more than 150 in just three years and doubled the number of teams he captained in 2014. He plans to host his own league in 2015.

Region 3 – Scott Jones, PGA: Turnberry Golf Course (Pickerington, Ohio)

• Jones was a driving force in establishing PGA Junior League Golf in the Southern Ohio PGA Section, where he established a league among the Columbus City Golf Courses in 2013. In 2014, Jones doubled the number of leagues among these courses and helped increase teams within his Section five-fold. He has captained the league’s All-Star teams for the last two years, advancing through multiple rounds both years.

Region 4 – Todd Russell, PGA: Springbrook Golf Club (Naperville, Ill.)

• Russell has been instrumental in growing PGA Junior League Golf within the Illinois PGA Section. He helped his area participation grow from one, five-team league in 2013 to two leagues with a total of 10 teams in 2014.

Region 5 – Ralph Landrum, PGA: World of Golf (Florence, Ky.)

• Landrum served as the key point of contact for communications with PGA Junior League Golf captains within the Kentucky PGA Section and has been critical in growing the program within the Section. In 2014, he administered his own five-team league out of his facility, which included players from the local Boys & Girls Club. Landrum was recently awarded with the PGA National Player Development Award.

Region 6 – Jack Dean, PGA: Dublin, Ga.

• Dean singlehandedly started a full league from scratch without being associated with a golf facility in 2014. He grew his team from zero to 40-plus participants and has become an ambassador for growing the game at the grassroots level.

Region 7 – Nic Bunning, PGA: Greenbriar Hills Country Club (Kirkwood, Mo.)

• Bunning was one of five original captains in the Gateway PGA Section in 2013, playing a large role in growing the Section total to 47 teams while captaining three teams and managing his league. He has assisted in designating teams to leagues while serving as a key point of contact for the Section’s PGA Junior League Golf communications and has also led a team of all-stars to the Regional Championship for the last two seasons.

Region 8 – Nolan Halterman, PGA: Anthem Country Club (Henderson, Nev.)

• Halterman successfully launched the first league in the Las Vegas market in 2014, personally recruiting fellow golf professionals to create a six-team league while coordinating all schedules. He captained the All-Star team to a third place finish in the West Regional and plans add up to three leagues in 2015.

The regional PGA Sections of the Year honorees were selected based on the total number of teams, percentage increase in teams from 2013, percentage of PGA facilities participating and their overall involvement in PGA Junior League Golf promotion, recruitment, league assignments and communication.

Each of the eight regional PGA Junior League Golf Sections of the Year saw significant increases in team participation in 2014. Below are the regional winners and their percentage increases from 2013 to 2014:
