Exam Guideline

- Students will have from 6:30-9:10 pm

- Open book / open note / open web (closed neighbor – individual exam)

- Use your laptop computer for the exam (submit via dropbox or email)

- Students answer a total of 5 of the 6 questions (of their choice)

- Each of the 5 questions is worth 20 pts each for a total of 100 pts test grade (translated to 500 pts for the course grade)

- The page limit for each question will be one page maximum per question (single spaced - Times New Roman, 12 pt, singled spaced, 1” margins throughout - this is just for consistency across students)

- There is no minimum required. Generally, I have observed responses between ¾ page and one page to generally be the most rigorous and insight responses. However, please note that the grade for each question is not based on the length of the response. A full page response does not necessarily mean it was done well (if it is not rigorous). Also a response of approx ½ page could yield full points (if one is able to provide substantially rigorous insight within this space) – however, I have generally observed that it most often takes a bit more writing to really hit the topic with the greatest amount of thought.

- Please note that there can be vastly different approaches that two students may take – yet both can be highly insightful, thought-out, and articulated.

- The book (Adv IT Leader) and all readings are relevant materials for the exam. The materials will be represented on the exam approximately proportional to the degree to the length / coverage. In other words – (i.e. Adv of an IT Leader will be clearly be more highly represented than a single individual article).

- You will not have any specific questions from the student project presentations. However, knowledge of IS topics can be used to supplement one’s answer to a question.

Prior Exam – Sample Questions

The questions assigned for the Case write-ups on the course website are good examples.

The question below is based on material that you are familiar with.

1. Analyze Barton’s (IVK) dilemma regarding IT investments and managing IT talent. How does your position on these issues specifically apply when IT is viewed as a cost center vs. a revenue facilitator? Please apply additional ideas generated from the other course readings and class discussion to support your analysis – where applicable.

Please find below 2 additional exam questions – from prior material. Please note that the topics/material for the two questions below were not covered in your class (therefore this material is not relevant to your class). However, I wanted to provide some additional examples. In these prior classes, we had discussed these topics are great length - you will observe the open-ended nature around these specific topics.

1. You are the COO of BankX (a large national bank) – you have chosen to outsource your company’s network to Cisco and a strategic system (e.g. CRM, ERP, or one of your choosing) to EDS. Discuss some of the factors that you should consider that could potentially lead to failed outsourcing relationship in each case. Describe how you would design a contract with both Cisco and EDS so that you form a partnership in which may be able to increase potential benefits and reduce risks to your company. Provide support from the case and class discussions where applicable.

2. Describe the advantages and disadvantages of a centralized vs. a decentralized IT organizational structure. Provide examples from the cases and our class discussion to support your points.
