Applications of Biology

Student Performance Expectations

Instructors: Dr. F. McAuliffe and Mrs. B. Levenstien

Goals of the course:

The course is an overview of the biological sciences. The student is introduced to the science of biology, the diversity of life, biochemistry, cellular structure and function, the basic needs of organisms, natural selection, genetics, and applications in biotechnology.

We will discuss bioethical issues related to topics such as cloning, stem cell research, and genetic engineering.

Communication:

We think communication between parents and teachers is very important.

If you wish to contact either of us, please use the following e-mail addresses:

fmcauliffe@mtsd.us

blevenstien@mtsd.us

If it is difficult to e-mail us, contact us via the phone, the school number is (609) 466-7602. Our extensions are

Ext. 6877 (McAuliffe) and Ext. 6916 (Levenstien).

Homework, projects, and dates of upcoming tests and projects are posted on Dr. McAuliffe’s webpage, NOT on Parent Resources.

Class rules:

Respect each other, be courteous and kind. No name calling, swearing, teasing or put-downs will be tolerated. Listen to what others have to say.

We expect you to be in class on time. You will get a teacher detention the third time you are late.

Always be prepared. Bring your binder, your agenda and a pen every day, even on test days.

Leave your book-bag in the designated area when you come in. Take to your seat ONLY what you need for the class.

Do not get out of your seat without permission.

If you need to use the bathroom, you will need to get your agenda signed and you must sign out in the log book with the time you leave and the time you come back.

Raise your hand if you want to ask or answer a question.

You may speak together during group work or labs but keep the volume low.

Wait to be dismissed at the end of class. One of us will give you the signal. Leave the room as clean as you found it.

Cheating and plagiarizing are absolutely not tolerated. You will get a zero for the assignment, an office referral for points, and your parents will be notified.

Remember that you should write your own lab report. You may discuss the

results with your partner but the final write-up has to be done individually.

Safety:

Safety is a major concern in a lab course. Each student will be instructed in the proper safety procedures in the lab. Safety precautions will be reinforced for each lab activity.

A safety contract is posted on my webpage. Please read it and sign the form given to each student.

Extra-Help:

We will be available on Wednesday.

Materials:

Materials will usually be kept in the classroom. These include:

Textbook: Prentice-Hall: Exploring Biology. The textbook can be kept at home.

A 3-ring binder to be used exclusively for the course (1 or 1.5 inches)

Most labs require eye protection. We have goggles available to students. You may purchase your own safety glasses for the less hazardous labs.

Grading:

Each assignment is given a point value. To compute your average, simply add all the points earned, divide by the total points possible and multiply by 100.

You will receive grades for test and quizzes, labs, biology binder checks, class work, homework and projects.

Attendance:

Missed tests and quizzes will be made up after school or at another mutually convenient time.

Missed labs will be made up or in some cases I will give you the information needed to write the report or an alternative assignment.

If you know you will not be attending the class because of a personal reason or a school activity but you are coming to school on that day, make sure the assignment due gets to me.

Student and parent/guardian:

Please sign the form provided.
