Han van den Hoek

Chief Agriculture Officer McCain Foods

A native of the Netherlands, Han van den Hoek brings to McCain Foods a very long, deep and broad knowledge of the potato business. After earning a degree in Agriculture in 1980, Han joined Agrico (later to become Agrico/ CelaVita), a cooperative in the Netherlands where he worked on the development of onion processing and blanched, non-frozen potato products.

In 1982 Han joined McCain. Since then he has brought his expertise to a wide variety of disciplines and responsibilities, including: agronomy; corporate development; account management – McDonald’s; potato project management; various special assignments for McDonald’s (e.g., Brazil, Russia, Taiwan); Deputy Director, McCain Potatoes Holland BV; and VP Agriculture McCain Northern Europe, 1998-2002.

Han became VP Agriculture Continental Europe in 2002, after the creation of the Continental Europe Organization. In this role he oversaw management of all raw-material activities, including supervision of six grading stations at the factories.

In June 2013, Han stepped up to the position in Global Agriculture as Senior Advisor Ag strategy, risk and potato position management and in November 2014 he became theGlobal Chief Agriculture Officer for McCain Foods.

Han sits on the boards of the Dutch potato traders’ organization (NAO), the Belgian potato processing section, and the raw material branch of the Dutch processing industry organization (Vavi).

Han and his wife Tineke love reading, gardening and spending time with their four children: Jan, Eelco, Willemieke and Geert. Han speaks Dutch, French, English and German.

Peggy Gates-Hammond, CA, CFP, TEP

Peggy Gates-Hammond joined BMO Harris Private Banking in the spring of 2011. She brings nearly three decades of experience in financial and professional services to our Atlantic Canada team.

Peggy is a Chartered Accountant, Certified Financial Planner, Trust and Estate Practitioner, and she holds a Business degree from Saint Mary’s University. She completed the in-depth income tax training through the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants and has worked extensively in the areas of tax and estate planning.

She works with BMO Harris clients and their families as well as their legal, tax and insurance advisors to develop customized strategies for achieving financial goals. Her extensive experience has honed Ms. Gates-Hammond’s ability to serve clients through all stages of their financial lives.

A Halifax native, Peggy is active in her community, having served as Executive and Board Member for a number of charitable and professional organizations. She is currently serving on the Board for the Dalhousie University Centre for Family Business and Regional Prosperity. Peggy is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nova Scotia, the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants, the Canadian Tax Foundation, and the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP) in Canada. She is currently serving as Chair of the Atlantic Chapter of STEP Canada. Peggy is a marathon runner. In her spare time she also enjoys cycling, sailing and the occasional round of golf.

Patrick Cunningham

Patrick Cunningham, a tax partner, joined the Fredericton office of Grant Thornton LLP in 1983 and was admitted to partnership in 1994.

As a tax partner, Pat is responsible for the provision of domestic income tax planning and compliance services, and related business advisory services, to clients in various industries.

Pat has been involved in numerous corporate reorganizations; succession and estate planning assignments; and purchase and sale transactions.

Pat’s primary focus is the provision of tax services to privately held businesses and their owners. This includes assisting clients in a wide range of industries including professional services, construction, manufacturing and distribution, agriculture, and real estate, to minimize their income tax burden.

James M VanTassel

Jim VanTassel is a partner of Grant Thornton LLP.

Jim’s professional experience includes audit and non audit assignments for small to mid sized privately held companies in a number of industries including distribution and wholesale, manufacturing, agriculture, forestry and real estate development. Jim has also had considerable experience in the audits of many different non-profit entities including hospitals, nursing homes, municipalities and non profit housing organizations.

Jim is also actively involved with various special projects associated with First Nations communities including Co-Management Agreements, Sales Tax Reimbursement Contracts and consulting contracts.

Jim has been actively involved in community activities including past president of the Perth-Andover Rotary Club, Treasurer of the Perth-Andover Non Profit Housing Inc. and serving on the Board of Directors of Aroostook Valley Country Club.
