This one year certificate is designed to be used as either an entry point to a job/career as an entry level Health Educator or Assistant or to expand or broaden the professional skills and job opportunities in the following occupational areas:Personal Health/Wellness Coach/Advocate, Public Health Advocacy, Social and Human Service Workers/Advocates, Community Health Worker , Nutritionist, Substance Abuse Counselors/Specialists, Early Childhood and Elementary School Educators or assistants, Chronic Disease prevention and Care Specialists, Mental and Developmental health, Exercise Movement Science/ Fitness Specialists, Recreation Specialists, Occupational or Environmental Health and Safety Specialists, Emergency and Disaster coordinators, Emergency Medical Response, Health Navigators, Health and Human Service Worker, Residential Activity Coordinators, Certified Nurse Assistants, Registered Nurse and all occupations that include the promotion of health behavior change and intervention and the prevention and/or care of chronic and acute personal and community health conditions. Students who complete this certificate will receive education that will support and encourage their ability to act as an advocate, trainer and promoter of positive individual and community health outcomes. The classes within this career pathway will encompass every dimension within the academic field of Health Education/Promotion which include; physical, social, emotional, mental, psychological, occupational, and environmental aspects of personal and community health and well-being.Labor Market Need:The Affordable Care Act created a Prevention and Public Health Fund which is a new dedicated investment in promotion of wellness, disease prevention and protection for public health emergencies/disasters. This investment will also bring an increased focus on prevention which will require a new generation of educated specialists from the bottom of the career ladder to the top. Preventable chronic diseases such as heart disease, stroke and diabetes are responsible for 7 out of 10 deaths among people in the U.S. each year and account for approximately 75% of the nation’s health care spending. The need to focus on prevention not only will improve our health it will significantly control government and individual spending on health care costs. According to a report from Trust of America’s Health, investing $1 in proven community-based programs could bring back $5.60, which is a significant return on this important investment (). Along with this report, The Compendium Of Proven Community Based Prevention Programs highlights numerous examples of health education and promotion success stories from around the country () and the Annual report to the President and Congress from the National Prevention Council . Although most job opportunities for Health Educators are for those with degrees at the bachelors and master’s degree level, students who combine this certificate with any other related degree or certificate are likely to greatly improve their employment opportunities within this any other related field. According to our needs assessment, twenty eight of twenty nine employers surveyed through the Pacific Northwest and California, who had open positions in Health Education or a related field said that if they would be willing to hire somebody with specialized skills in Health Education at a lower wage. These employers agreed that having this training would allow them to hire more people into the Health Education and promotion entry level positions.Target Population:Anyone that is currently working in a related field that would like to add this certificate to help expand their potential employability, upgrade their current work status or Students’ who would are interested in this field and would prefer to obtain a 1 Yr. Public Health Education and Promotion Certificate at Lane Community College. Any students who are working toward the 2 year AAS degree in Human Services at Lane.
