SUMMARY

The Director of the Grief Center supervises and coordinates the delivery of all bereavement support services by Alive Hospice.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Coordinates the agency’s comprehensive bereavement services program for Alive Hospice families and others in the community, including individual counseling, support group program, and youth camps.

2. Provides clinical and administrative supervision and support to the bereavement staff, as well as conducting their annual performance evaluations.

3. Provides regular bereavement counseling to a limited number of clients.

4. Conducts research and oversees development of additional programs deemed necessary to best meet the bereavement needs of hospice families and the community.

5. Develops and coordinates Bereavement Services performance improvement plan to ensure that accreditation standards are being met.

6. Recruits, screens, hires, and orients new bereavement staff. Selects bereavement staff in coordination with the/VP Mission-Based Services.

7. Works in conjunction with the Director of Volunteer Services to recruit bereavement group volunteers.

8. Develops and maintains ongoing training program and supervision for bereavement group volunteers.

9. Participates in preparation of annual department budget and reports monthly on revenue, client volumes, and utilization patterns.

10. Develops, maintains, and oversees revision of bereavement support department policies and procedures.

11. Ensures completion and implementation of annual bereavement services program plan.

12. Participates in continuing education activities within the agency and in the community at large, as well as appropriate professional development.

13. In collaboration with staff in the Community Development department and Alive Institute, participates in the development and execution of marketing for bereavement services in the community.

14. In collaboration with grant manager and fundraising staff, assist with identifying potential granting agencies and donors and meet with prospects where appropriate.

15. Participates in agency and department meetings as required.

16. Other duties may also be assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Directly supervises eight employees; may also directly supervise office volunteers. Is responsible for overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of this department. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

CONTINUING EDUCATION

The agency requires this position to complete 15 hours of continuing education per year covering topics that will contribute to improvements in carrying out the above responsibilities. Regulatory agencies may require some disciplines to have addition hours in order to be licensed or certified.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Master’s degree in social work, related field (i.e., counseling, education, psychology, etc.) and/or equivalent professional credential. Minimum of two years of post-Master’s experience in a counseling or support group setting required.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, interpret, and evaluate professional healthcare journals,

business-oriented reports, and simple legal documents. Ability to professionally and effectively respond to inquiries, complaints and requests for education from patients, families, healthcare professionals, and community members. Ability to write and deliver speeches and in-service trainings for various levels of audiences. Ability to effectively advocate for professional discipline, agency, patient, and family with external and internal parties. Ability to make presentations which are clear and provide accurate educational information.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to use statistical measures for operations functions and performance improvement activities. Ability to analyze, project, and formulate budgets. Ability to understand healthcare financing.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to define and clarify problems, collect all relevant input, draw valid conclusions and enact appropriate and effective solutions. Display high level of personal and professional maturity, maintain and assist others to maintain appropriate boundaries.

Ability to analyze care needs, resources and allocate responsibilities. Ability to interpret an array of theoretical constructs and technical applications in healthcare and confounding areas.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Licensed by the State of Tennessee as an L.C.S.W. or equivalent credential for counseling in the state of Tennessee. Valid Tennessee Driver’s license and automobile insurance as required by Tennessee State Law or equivalent professional credentials from another state.
