02 Basic Hot KeysInstructor (IN): When JAWS is installed it does not set a Windows shortcut. Window-Eyes, on the other hand, by default sets CTRL+ALT+W as its startup Windows shortcut. This means that if Window-Eyes is not running the user can press CTRL+ALT+W and Window-Eyes will start. Since JAWS doesn't do that, I will demonstrate how to create a Windows shortcut with CTRL+ALT+J to start JAWS. First, I will move to the desktop with Windows +M. JAWS: Desktop folder view, list view.IN: Now I will press the letter J until I reach the JAWS 18 shortcut.JAWS: JAWS 18.0. IN: Now I will press ALT with enter to activate the properties for the shortcut. JAWS: JAWS 18.0 properties dialog, shortcut page. IN: It is very important that you do not change any of these settings if you are not sure exactly what they mean. For the purposes of this demo, I will press the tab key twice to take me to the shortcut area.JAWS: start in, shortcut key, hot key none.IN: You'll notice that the word none is used, meaning that there is no shortcut setup. Once I am focused in this box all I have to do is press the letter J and that will automatically set CTRL+ALT+J as my shortcut. Now I will press ENTER to continue. In some cases, you may be prompted to accept with a continue button or you may even be prompted with a network password. In my case, I was not. So, now I will verify that the shortcut is there. I will go to my main desktop with Windows. JAWS: Desktop, folder view, list view. JAWS 18.0. IN: And you'll notice that the JAWS icon is already selected. So, now I will press ALT+enter for properties. JAWS: JAWS 18.0 properties dialog, shortcut page, target edit. IN: And now I will press tab twice. JAWS: Start in, shortcut key, hotkey CTRL+ALT+J. IN: And there it is CTRL+ALT+J is set up as my JAWS Windows shortcut. To start it I'm going to press escape to close it since I don't need to make any changes. One important hotkey, and I've mentioned it in other modules, is INSERT+J. Window-Eyes users will be used to pressing CTRL+\ to activate the Window-Eyes CTRL panel. JAWS has different windows, different settings areas, but the main window for JAWS is activated with insert+J. JAWS: JAWS Home Use. IN: In this case, it's taking me to the main JAWS window. From here I can press the ALT key and navigate its various different menus. One other important thing in Windows is to know which program has focus. Visually, it might look like various different programs are open, but you might not be able to tell exactly which one is in the foreground or has focus. So JAWS has a hotkey to do this. The default hotkey is insert with the letter T as in title. Window-eyes users will be used to this by pressing CTRL+shift+T from Window-Eyes. So, I will press INSERT+T now.JAWS: Title is JAWS Home Use. IN: If I open another program such as Word and press it I will get a confirmation that Word is my active program. JAWS: Title is document one, Word, print view.IN: So, in addition to getting the title of the program which is Word, I am also informed that I am in document 1 and that I am in print view mode. This is perfect. I will write up a quick sentence. This is a test. You will notice that JAWS did not speak anything as I was writing. One of the options that you can set in the Quick Startup Wizard is how you want the keyboard echo to be set up. Now that I typed in something, I'm going to press up arrow to go back to it. JAWS: This is a test. IN: So, JAWS is reading me the fact that I wrote this line and it is reading, “This is a test”. What if I want to repeat this line? I will use the read line hotkey which is insert+up arrow. JAWS: This is a test.IN: Window-Eyes users might use CTRL+number pad 5 to read the current line. So, the equivalent in JAWS is insert+up arrow. The last hotkey I want to draw your attention to is insert+F4. This is the hot key that is used to unload JAWS. Window-Eyes users might use CTRL+insert+F4 to unload Window-Eyes. Of course, another way is you can simply go to the Window-Eyes CTRL panel and close it there using ALT+F4. JAWS is no different. If I press insert+J to focus the main JAWS window, JAWS: JAWS Home Use.IN: I can then press ALT+F4 followed by enter to acknowledge the confirmation, and JAWS will unload. However, I can simply press insert+F4 JAWS: Unloading JAWS.IN: To get the unload JAWS window right away and then press enter; and now JAWS is not loaded, which means that my computer will not speak. Since I recently set up the CTRL+ALT+J hotkey to start JAWS, I will go ahead and press that.JAWS: JAWS Home Use Edition. IN: And JAWS loads and starts talking.Thank you for listening. ................
