November 2019 Newsletter

From the Superintendent – Andy Siegfried

Flu Precautions:

Your school district is taking a cautious and common sense approach to what health officials are predicting will be a very active flu season.

COVER – your nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing

CLEAN – wash hands frequently during the day

CONTAIN – stay home if sick.

If there is ever a need to close school or to deliver important health information, you will be contacted directly by our Parent Emergency Notification and Information System. Make sure our school secretaries have your current phone numbers and other additional contact information. I would suggest having your personal cell phone as your main number if possible. You may also choose to visit our school district website, chaneymonge.us, or for more on-line information at any time.

Remember, COVER-CLEAN-CONTAIN!

Is School Closed?

It’s freezing cold, the snow’s blowing, wind’s howling and my homework isn’t done; what a great time to find out that there is no school! If possible, the decision to close school is made the night before or very early in the morning (before 7:00 AM) of the day classes will be canceled.

By Phone:

Principal Jackie Hall will send a recorded phone message directly to the phone numbers listed on your child’s registration form. Messages are sent immediately after the decision is made to close school for the day. Please do not call the school to verify that school has been closed. Make sure your answering machine or message systems are in working order.

Please remember that in the event of an emergency release, the 1st phone call made will be the 1st contact phone number listed on your child’s registration form. If we cannot reach a parent or family member your student will remain here at the school at the time students are released. The 2nd and subsequent phone calls will be made to cell phone numbers, work numbers, and emergency contacts.

Emergency School Closings:

Unless you receive a “school closed” call from our school district parent emergency notification system, hear a notice that school is closed on any of media outlets below or see a notice on our school district website, SCHOOL IS OPEN!. Do not waste your time calling the school district numbers since there will be no one available to answer your call. Instead, tune in or type in any of the media outlets listed below:

SAFETY:

Parking regulations, traffic laws, bright orange cones, tickets and school rules will not prevent an accident from happening. However, as adult drivers, we all must remind ourselves that there is no excuse for compromising the safety of any child because we are in a hurry, late for an appointment, or angry at a family member or angry at a driver in the vehicle ahead.

So, for the sake of all children, drive safely and extremely carefully during your trips to, from and around school at all times. Discuss basic pedestrian safety with your kids. Our staff members, administrators and Crest Hill Police Department are committed to making sure your kids remain safe – and I am sure you are too.

2019 School Report Card

The new Illinois score report card is scheduled to be released October 31, 2019. The direct link to our school report card will be posted online at our website once it is ready. The state has redesigned the school report card with additional data points and new classifications. The link to all of the Illinois school report cards is located below.

Board Meetings:

The Chaney Monge Board of Education meets on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday each month starting at 7 p.m. We generally meet in the library during the school year.

From the Principal – Jackie Hall

Attendance Matters!!

We have had a large number of tardies and several students with a large number of absences already and we are only just past the first quarter of school. Please get your students to school and on time.

Tardies and absences add up to lost learning and lack of academic progress. Research has proven that poor attendance habits in elementary school often lead to becoming a high school dropout.

If your child is ill, please call the office so your child is excused. The office texts families as a reminder to call and report the reason for the absence. Often, many student absences are not called in. Students with attendance concerns are referred to the Will County Truancy Officer. Students missing for several days and without office contact may be contacted by Crest Hill Police as a safety check. Please ensure the success of your child by emphasizing the importance of school attendance.

RECOGNITION AWARDS ASSEMBLIES

Invitations are sent and phone calls are made to families of students who have earned an award for the 1st quarter in hopes that you may be able to attend. The awards assembly honors those students who have displayed excellence and are given a Certificate of Achievement and a display in the hallway for the areas of reading, effort, character and improvement. Students are also honored for Perfect Attendance and Honor Roll (fourth grade and up) at the assemblies as well as awards given from the library.

The 1st Quarter Awards assembly will be held on November 12th:

K-5th Grade: 9:00 am to 9:40 am

6th – 8th Grade: 11:15 am to 11:54 am

Students will have more educational activities after the awards assembly.

Please check the school website at chaneymonge.us for Recognition Award Assembly dates and times or look for future newsletter articles. We hope to see you there!

Veteran’s Day

On Thursday, November 7th at 10:00 AM, Chaney-Monge will hold our annual Veteran’s Day Program in the gym. Please join us in honoring the people who secured our freedom. Thank you to Mr. Crawford and Mrs. Keller for organizing and preparing our students for this event.

ATTENDANCE VOICEMAIL AVAILABLE

If your student is sick and will be out of school for the day, you may leave a voicemail the night prior or in the morning before the office opens. We are required to contact parents regarding student absences. Please leave a voicemail message prior to the absence and/or call the office to report the absence. If a parent has not indicated a reason for the student absence, the absence is automatically unexcused.

Illinois State Police Community Sex Offender List

A link to the Illinois State Police website will be available on our Chaney-Monge website. Access to the Illinois Sex Offender Database is available online. Other information is also available on the Illinois State Police website.

Parent Teacher Conferences will be November 6th and November 7th from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. There are no kindergarten classes on the above dates. Grades 1-8 will be dismissed at 1:30 p.m. on both dates also. Please make every effort to attend and join us in planning your child’s success. All conferences are scheduled and held by your child’s homeroom teacher and held in the classroom. We look forward to sharing your child’s work and progress.

November 7th we also will have our annual Veteran’s Day Assembly.

Reminder - No school on Friday November 8th.

Students of the Month

Mrs. Shields reports that September Lion’s Club Students of the Month were: 5th grader Stephanie Raia; 6th grader, C. J. Sahler; 7th grader, Macy Helis; and 8th graders Natasha Guzman & Idalia Salinas.

Congratulations on your award!

Parent Connect to View Your Student’s Grades-Grades 3-8

Don’t forget you are able to view your child’s grades through a secure connection via our school website. Accounts, passwords and user directions were distributed at the beginning of the year. You are able to view grades posted to each teacher’s electronic grade book. This tool enables parents to check student completion of homework, grades earned and progress towards learning.

If you would like to have another copy of your parent connect password, please complete the request form available from your child’s homeroom teacher and/or the office.

Picture Day

All students in attendance on October 22nd were photographed. If you are interested in purchasing photos, an order form has already been sent home. Complete the order form, include the payment, and return to the office by the deadline listed on the form. We will forward the orders to the photographer. Should you miss the deadline and are still interested in purchasing photos, you will need to send orders and late fee directly to HR Imaging located in Ottawa, Illinois.

An absentee/retake picture day will be held on January 16th, 2020.

RETAKES: STUDENTS MUST BRING THEIR ORIGINAL PROOFING ENVELOPE BACK AND GIVE IT TO THE PHOTOGRAPHER ON RETAKE PICURE DAY.

Box Tops for Education

Ms. Pavnica reminds you to send in your unexpired box tops or scan in your receipt on the All New Box Tops app. Your box top donations help provide supplies and activities to our students and school.

For now you can still clip and turn in your box tops. This process will eventually be replaced with the ability to scan right from your phone. All you need to do is download the ALL-NEW Box Tops app, shop as you normally would, then simply scan your store receipts. The app will automatically credit your school’s Box Tops earnings online. It’s that easy!

And don’t forget to check out for money-saving coupons!

[pic]CHANEY MONGE ELEMENTARY NEWSPAPER

We have our team in place and are hard at work. Our third through fifth graders are hard at work. The schedule for November and December are as follows unless there is an unforeseen situation (weather or illness on my part).

Tuesday, November 5 @ 2:45 to 4:00

Tuesday, November 12 @ 2:45 to 4:00

Tuesday, November 19 @ 2:45 to 4:00

Tuesday, December 3 @ 2:45 to 4:00

Tuesday, December 10 @ 2:45 to 4:00

Tuesday, December 17 @ 2:45 to 4:00

Please be sure to have your ride present. If you wish your child to walk home after newspaper, please send a note stating that you are giving permission for your child with their name and date on the letter. Or if there is an older sibling, please have them meet them at the corner and walk with them. That is so much safer with the time changing at the beginning of November and it will be dark when they are leaving school. Safety first!!

CMPAA - Sports News

We'd like to thank all the families that participated in the Affy Tapple fundraiser. We raised a lot of money for sports.

Our top sellers were Gavin Gayhart and Gabriella Shourek. Congratulations on winning the gift cards.

Basketball season is underway for all levels.  Come watch a game and support our Braves!

We would like to thank all the parents who volunteer their time to coach a team. Without you this wouldn't be possible.

The Chaney Braves Basketball Tournament is right around the corner. The dates are December 6th thru December 8th and December 13th thru December 15th. This is the perfect time to work off your parent volunteer hours. Please let your coach know if you are available to help.

Always remember, "It's for the Kids"

CMMPA – Music News

These first nine weeks have really flown by here in the music room! We’ve been working really hard on further developing the ensembles and awesome progress is being made. Our 7th and 8th graders are really stepping up as leaders for our new 6th graders and that is something that is really helping us grow as an ensemble. It had been an exciting challenge to get to know the students as musicians and as people in this first quarter and I’m excited to see how we grow as the year continues.

We have a busy first two weeks of November. The Concert Band and Choir will perform for the Veteran’s Day Assembly on November 7th at 10AM during the school day. Then only 6 days later we have our Fall Concert on Wednesday, November 13th! The concert will begin at 7PM and it will feature our Concert Band, 5th Grade Band, and Choir. Students will need to arrive at school by 6:15PM to ensure all students are dressed and have some warm-up time with each ensemble.

Here’s a little update on our fourth grade beginners. They are all doing a great job in their lessons. We’re making some amazing progress! The students aren’t quite ready for a public performance yet, so they will not be featured in the upcoming fall concert. I look forward to showing you their amazing growth in our March concert! In the mean time I encourage you to have them perform for you and family members. Nothing quite brings in the Holidays like your beginner band student playing jingle bells for the whole family!
