STUDENT COUNSEL UPDATES

Student Council will be hosting Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser Saturday, February 2nd 8-10am at Applebee’s.

There is Student Council tutoring by appt every Wednesday.

After School program has openings available.

A note about the cold weather:

This morning I reminded my middle school child that with this very cold weather comes, the need to wear a winter coat and maybe even a hat! And I got the usual ‘I know Mom’ look.

I often see kids arrive at school in freezing temperatures shaking from the cold because they don’t have on winter clothing. One day, I observed a student being dropped off down the road from school in shorts. There was snow on the ground!

I know, many middle school students think it’s not ‘cool’ to wear the appropriate apparel when the temperature drops. And as parents, we are certain that if they don’t stay warm, they’ll get sick. Then again, maybe they won’t get sick. I heard the jury is still out on that one. Common sense does tell us that they’ll be much more comfortable walking to/from school and waiting outside in the freezing temperatures before/after school if they have on warm clothes.

I found out recently that if your student needs winter apparel, you can just call the school and they will be able to assist in obtaining some.

I guess for now the best we can do is keep encouraging them to put on the coat and dare I even suggest… the hat? I think I need to go put on my mittens.

HEALTH OFFICE NEWS

All students entering 6th grade in the 2019-2020 school year must have documentation of Tdap and 2 varicella vaccinations. Parent recall of Varicella (Chicken Pox) is not sufficient and cannot be accepted as proof of immunity.

All students entering 7th grade in the 2019-2020 school must have documentation of the meningitis vaccine.

If your child has not had these vaccinations, please call their pediatrician or the Chautauqua County health department over the summer and have them done.

Also, students entering grades 5 and 7 will need to have documentation of a physical exam (Well child visit) within the last year.

Spring sports begin March 1st, so if your child is interested in track, softball, or baseball, have them get a yes/no form from the nurse and make sure they have had a physical within the last year.

Please contact the school nurse, Mrs. Conti, if you have any questions or concerns at 483-4430.

Interview of the month:

This month we interviewed Ms. Perez who is an important staff member to students in all grade levels at Jefferson Middle School. In her interview below, she shares with us what she does at Jefferson and gives us a little personal information too.

Tell us what you do at Jefferson.

I am the Planning Center Paraprofessional. I provide a comfortable environment where students can develop positive relationships to help them gain classroom skills, learning strategies & emotional skills to use in their everyday life. The Planning Center helps them become positive members of our community.

How long have you worked at Jefferson and for the school district?

I’ve worked at Jefferson Middle School since 2010 with the exception of a year at JHS in 2015. I’ve worked a total of 11 years for the district.

What did you want to be when you were in middle school?

I wanted to be a teacher.

When you’re not working, what do you like to do in your spare time?

When I’m not working, I enjoy spending time with my family.

What part of your job do you enjoy most?

I enjoy working with each student and getting to know them individually. Over the years, I have enjoyed watching them grow into young men and women.

What current student trends baffle you now?

Ripped jeans. Who pays for anything that is ripped? Joggers would be my next pick. Loose on top, tight at the bottom, not sweats, but not pants either. I don’t understand either trend.

What is your favorite book and why?

I would say it’s the book Wonder. I really enjoyed it! It’s a great story and it has a good message for every one of all ages.

What do you usually eat for breakfast?

Does coffee count? LOL!!

I’m not much of a breakfast person.

What would the students be surprised to hear about you?

I love to sing!

How do you relax after a long day at work?

I run home, change into my pajamas and relax on the couch.

What is the most interesting question people ask you at work?

“How can you handle these kids Miss?”
