Triathlon Bound

Mr. Jackson coaches the junior varsity track team. He has entered his athletes in a triathlon. He needs information to help him motivate and prepare his athletes for this challenging event.

The triathlon consists of 1 mile of swimming, 25 miles of biking, and 6 miles of running. Mr. Jackson estimates that the average time spent on each phase of the race will be 30 minutes for swimming, 75 minutes for biking, and 60 minutes for running. He sets up a training schedule that includes two sports each day.

Part A

Mr. Jackson wants to use the average times in the race as a basis for daily training times. On each day of training, the time spent on the two sports will be in the same ratio as the time expected in the actual race. Write a ratio for the amount of time that will be spent in the race for each pair of sports. Use ratio language to explain how Mr. Jackson should set up each day of training.

Part B

Make a table of values for each ratio found in Part A to show different amounts of time that could be spent on the sports during training days. Each table should have 5 pairs of values relating the two sports. The maximum values in each table should be the average time spent on the sports in the race.

Part C

Graph the ordered pairs from the tables on the same coordinate plane. Describe how the ratios of the times for each pair of sports compare.

Part D

Mr. Jackson would like to know the average speed for each sport. Use the average time Mr. Jackson originally estimated would be spent on each phase of the actual race. Find the average speed for each sport as a unit rate of miles per hour (mph).

Part E

Mr. Jackson wants to find out how far an athlete will swim on Monday and bike and run on Tuesday of the first week of training compared to the fourth week of training. Each week of training corresponds to the entries listed in your ratio tables. For example, the first week of training uses the first set of times in your tables in Part B, and the second week of training uses the second set of times in your tables. Find the distances for the first and fourth weeks of training for each sport. Use the speeds found in Part D.

The ratio between swimming and biking is 30:75, or 2:5.

On Monday and Friday, for every 2 minutes of swimming,

there will be 5 minutes of biking.

The ratio between swimming and running is 30:60, or 1:2.

On Wednesday, for every minute of swimming, there will be

2 minutes of running.

The ratio between running and biking is 60:75, or 4:5.

On Tuesday and Thursday, for every 4 minutes of running,

there will be 5 minutes of biking.

Partial Credit (1 point) will be given for correct ratios OR the correct explanation of what the ratio means.

No credit will be given for an incorrect answer.
